Are day of wedding coordinators worth it?

We're really trying to keep costs to a minimum for a our wedding. I was suggested by a couple family members that it might be worth while hiring a wedding coordinator for the day of the wedding. (Our wedding is being held at my father's ranch, not a traditional venue that comes with a coordinator.) My cousin has been a DJ for many weddings and he stated that the wedding coordinators were always incredibly helpful at directly the evening. He said "Your guests expect to be directed and told what to do." I just really want my reception to be a party, nothing guided aside from introductions at the beginning of the ceremony. Dinner is going to be buffet style and seating will be wherever guests want to sit. Any suggestions?

My coordinator has a HUGE inventory of decorations (votives, toasting flutes, linens, vases, mirrors, signs, you name it!) -- that I get to use for FREE! She's saving me a ton and I know I won't have to worry about all the things & people being in the right place or the right time on the day of the wedding!

I did not hire a DOC for a few reasons.... 1. I am meticulously organized and have been my entire life 2. Our venue was more traditional that does events all the time (a country club) and they have someone that at least for the reception plays that role. 3. We hired a very experienced officiant that has done thousands of weddings 4. We paid extra to have a "very experienced" DJ. While there was no one person in charge of the entire event, I felt like there was enough expertise there. The whole day went by without a single problem. I may have been more nervous/busy the week of trying to make sure myself that all details were in place. For me that could possibly have been the advantage of a DOC - though not enough to make we wish I had added that to my budget. That and having someone to help set up and take down (though my family and friends helped and it was fun to set up). Good Luck!

Yes absolutely. They make sure everything goes how it should. Think about it this way...say your florist has run into traffic or DJ forgot something or whatever...instead of YOU getting the frantic calls (and stress) they take that burden and they solve it ASAP. Then you don't have to worry, you won't even freaking know about it. The wedding day is in itself nerve wracking and stressful with a ton of people running around....the DOCs are like hidden superheroes that make everything smooth and managable. DO IT
