Are Buffets Really That Bad?

We are having a rather large wedding (about 150) and from the start I've wanted to do a plated meal. My venue charges an extra $5 per person to do this, in addition to charging $36 per each guest once we go over 100. We are having a rather large wedding (about 150) and from the start I've wanted to do a plated meal. My venue charges an extra $5 per person to do this, in addition to charging $36 per each guest once we go over 100.

Last week I started a rough draft of my morning-of timeline and realized I'm going to have to hire my photographer for several more hours to get all the photos I want. I am still waiting on her to give me an exact cost for this, but my guess is it will end up being at least another $800.

FH's suggestion was to stick with the buffet rather than the plated meal (thus saving $750) in order to afford the photographer. I feel buffets are really casual, and while this isn't a black tie event I don't want it to seem too laid back.

What are everyone's thoughts on this? FH keeps reminding me we aren't trying to impress anyone, and as long as we are feeding them a great meal they'll be happy.

An unlabeled buffet is a nightmare for people with food allergies or intolerances. I've been to buffets where I just ate the salad and some vegetables because everything has dairy and wheat in it. If you go the buffet route please label things.

All the weddings I have been to have been buffet. The thing that's works best is doing all toasts, first dances, during dinner. That will prevent having some people eating while others are dancing. In the 10 buffet weddings I've been too, it's never ran out of food, in face most of the weddings have offered second portions

In my area, almost everyone does buffets. As long as its set up correctly, there shouldn't be any problems.

Ask your caterer, venue, and DOC if you have one to give you ideas on efficient ways to do the buffet.

Buffets at our venue cost more than plated dinners, I thought it was because there's much more food being served with a buffet, we are having beef tenderloin carved with our buffet, which could explain higher price than plated meals

I think buffets can be very nice. You should find out from your caterer if they would have plated salads at the guest tables so there would be some food at the table that guests didn't have to wait for.

We are having a buffet at our wedding, I don't think the guests will mind as long as they are being hosted properly and fed a good meal.

I hate buffets. I feel it's so tacky to have guests, who dressed nicely, to walk around with their plates of food. I'd rather my guests be catered to.

So I was doing a plated.. when a few people found out I started getting horrible feedback like "yeah they put food on your plate you don't like, not enough of one item, still hungry" ect. I decided to do a buffet because If a person wants two dinner rolls versus one I want them to have that option. Yes I think plated is nicer looking but when it comes down to it I think guests will prefer making their own plate based off the feedback I've gotten

We're having a buffet and 250 people. I just don't care enough about plated to make it worth the cost (and it's not a black tie event). But I spoke with both my coordinator and caterer about timing for that many people. They were confident they could get through that many quickly-and they're experienced enough to know! It shouldn't be a problem if the people running the show are prepared to handle it.

Luckily, I've only been to a few weddings with buffets, because my experience with all of them have been bad. With 2 of them, we had to fly to attend, so we were really unhappy (other guests were, too).

I've been to all buffet weddings besides one or two. I've liked the buffets better.

I've been to both. I actually like buffet, unless it's not well managed and there's really long lines. I wanted buffet for our wedding, but it's more expensive than plated at all the venues I looked at.
