Amanda, on January 21, 2019 at 1:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 13
Hi all,

Just started planning and originally wanted May for lilacs and now I am am thinking of Last week of April, which will save us $20pp for food...should I be nervous for a wedding in NE in April?! Should I spend the money to get what I want? I do have a tighter budget, but could make May work.. help..

I’d go with the more cost efficient option.

I’d go with the one that saves more if you have an already tight budget. I’m not familiar with NE but if weather is what you’re afraid of maybe get a venue that you can do indoor/outdoor just in case of bad weather.

We are getting married in April over May, because it was cheaper at our venue.

Your florist will be able to get lilacs in April, but they will have to get them from somewhere that has them in season at that time. My main flower are sunflowers, which are definitely not in season in April in NJ, but I wanted them so my florist will get them from somewhere that's warmer! It can be done.

As for the weather, we are going in expecting rain, and will be pleasantly surprised if it's nice Smiley winking we took our engagement pictures in the rain though, and they came out beautiful so I'm not worried. Just make sure you have a plan B if you wanted any part of it outside.

If you definitely want May and can handle the cost, go for it. But if money is more of a priority than the date, go for April and save your money. It will still be very nice.

I would save the money in do April. I got married in upstate NY (right on Lake Ontario, so almost Canada) in the middle of May. The week of my wedding it was 80 degrees two days and lows 60s the day of the wedding, so there is no way of knowing the weather in the NE before June. Plus that year it rained a ton, and the apple blossoms were late, whereas this year, they were right on schedule, so even in you wait until May, the lilacs still might not cooperate. OR they could come early. Gotta love climate change!

Thank you ladies! I know the money could be well spent on other things, and we are looking at moving it 3 weeks up! With weather being so unpredictable (as someone said) it’s a chance of crap weather in May too! I’ll reach out to florist about lilacs, thank you to who suggested that!! Plus side, I get to marry my handsome 3 weeks earlier!! Lol!

Go with April, that's what we ended up doing. I originally wanted to get married in May, but after we were told how much money we would save, we changed the date to the last weekend of April. It's still a spring wedding and you'll get all the same amenities, but for a better price!

As a life long NEer, there is occasionally a freak snow storm in early April, but by late April there shouldn't be any problem with snow (worst snow pattern is always last week in January to the 2nd week in march). You won't be able to plan the temperature of the day, it very well might be 75 and sunny or 40 and rainy, but unless you are planning an outdoor wedding with no plan for rain that shouldn't be an issue.

Definitely go for the cheaper! We looked at the historical weather on the day we're getting married and it could be anywhere 45-90°....you just never really know!

Go with the cheaper option... the weather here is unpredictable no matter what month or time of the year it is ! It could be Christmas Day and be 60 .. you never know

As long as you are having an indoor ceremony and reception, you'll be fine. We got married in March and there was snow on the ground, but we were fine the day of.

Go with April. Booking everything will be easier. As for flower color, Larkspur ( Delphinium) and Freesia are widely available then , perennial in central states nurseries, in many shades of lavender, lilac, orchid, periwinkle, and reddish and bluish darker purples. So cheaper than imported flowers then. And smaller iris and showy Japanese iris, in a variety of purples. Plus tulips, pansies, you can have a ball with the purple shades suddenly cheap then. I was envious of my sister's choice in April in NH, because as soon as warmer states are a look, certain cut flowers like these go way down in price. Not so many weddings, and supply is big, suddenly. So nature will be with you. And they are fresher coming from Virginia and west, than imported and greenhouse, so they last longer.

You could always find a florist that would be able to get lilacs in April if it will save you money to do it then. I wanted to get married in October but we pushed it to January so we could save more money.

I went with first weekend in November vs October for the same reason. Now I'm loving the date we picked.
