Appetizers/cocktail Hour

Kaitlyn, on April 29, 2020 at 11:03 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

Hi all!

I'm getting married Sept. 2020! We are having an outdoor reception and future FIL's friends are doing smoked meats (they did this for my future SIL's wedding and it was great!). We are doing first looks and wedding party photos before the ceremony to help save time after the ceremony. We are only taking time to do family photos after. That being said, we most likely won't have a full "cocktail hour" but would like to do some appetizers since dances and such will be prior to dinner.

How many appetizers and what kinds of food would be best for outdoor/BBQ style meal appetizers for about 60 people?

You could make things super simple by just having stuff like chips and dips, fruit, cheese and cracker boards, etc.

Outdoor parties reminds me of stadium food.... nachos and cheese, peanuts in the shell, popcorn, or maybe even soft pretzels and beer cheese. I like Melle's ideas too!

I’ve been having problems with this too & ive struggled with how to make it look nice and not like regular bbq. I decided to go with dips and chips in beautiful serving platters along with different finger foods like chicken strips, finger sandwiches, etc.

    Hi Kaitlin! That sounds yummy!!

I like Melle's suggestion of fruit, fresh veggies, chips & dips, and cheese and crackers - the main meal sounds super filling so you could go with lighter options for apps! A big caprese platter, a few different types of hummus, and other savory snacks would be perfect.

Here are a few other helpful discussions you should check out with more suggestions:

    Appetizers (before BBQ dinner)

    Hors d'oeuvres (also before BBQ)

Thanks! I think this would be great! We are doing everything ourselves, so I think these things could be prepped the day before.

Yes! This is what is made me think of too, so I am torn between warm food like soft pretzels, etc. and quick, easy, cold platters!

Mary, there are not as many ideas on pinterest about making it look nice! lol I have had this struggle too. The grazing tables look awesome! But, after the virus is over, I feel like food nicely prepped on platters will be more accepted then just all over the table. I think serving platters are the way to go. That is what we are doing too.

Honestly I would keep the cocktail hour food on the lighter side (3 pieces per person). That way guests aren't so full they can't eat the main meal as many menus end up being.

Maybe some charcuterie boards or something. They can be made super pretty and are fairly light.
