Appetizers menu

Michelle, on September 29, 2021 at 10:31 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 3 7
How are you announcing these? Listing the menu in your ceremony programs or somewhere else? I know that they are commonly added to individual menu cards at the tables, but those are not read or seen until long after cocktail hour is over. Or are you having guests go in blind and they eat whatever there is without any way to know if one option is vegan or gluten free or seafood to avoid allergies? How does this work in your experience?

We don’t plan on having any sort of signage for our hors d’oeuvres during cocktail hour. We are having a small wedding, so we reached out to all our guests to see if anyone had any sort of allergies. We got lucky in that there is only one person that has food allergies, and it is to a particular nut. So we are simply ensuring no food served during our event contains that type of nut. Neither one of us have any friends or family (that are invited) that are vegan, gluten-free, keto, etc. But all hors d’oeuvres will be passed, so guests can feel free to ask the server if they have any questions about the food.

I've actually never seen a menu for cocktail hour. In my experience, and what we did at our wedding, there is typically a combination of passed hors d'oeuvres, served stations (attendants serving), and crudite platters. Guests are free to ask the servers about what is in the passed hors d'oeuvres or the options at the stations, and then the crudite platters are veggies, fruits, and cheeses, so it is relatively simple for people to avoid something they allergic to. I have a shellfish allergy, so we opted to not have any shellfish on the menu for cocktail hour or dinner.

We did do menus, actually, because I am an allergic person and I find myself often unable to eat anything at cocktail hours bc I don’t know what anything is! So I got the idea to do a menu that listed the passed apps and allergens, and it was an amusing conversation with my caterer (I mentioned wanting them, she said they don’t usually do that, I stated my case and she was like “wow yeah actually that’s a great idea I don’t know why we don’t do that more often” lol! Easier on staff too as they don’t have to be reciting ingredients to everyone) .

What we did is put one or two menu cards on each cocktail table, and another one or two on the bar . I’m sure not everyone noticed them, but a couple people mentioned liking them !

Obviously this is a staff issue but I just want to say , for what it’s worth, the amount of times I’ve asked a server at a wedding if there is (my extremely! common! allergen) in a thing and the response has been “oh…I don’t know” is shocking. It happens all the time and still surprises me, hah. So to anyone that does have some allergic people attending , I would encourage you to encourage the venue to make sure their staff is well versed in the allergens in what they are passing

As a guest, would you find it odd to have a menu posted somewhere, perhaps the ceremony programs, or would it be annoying? We aren’t doing any signage beyond the bar menu and the buffet/food stations tables.

We had lines on our RSVPs for Dietary Restrictions and a requested song. We're having fried mac and cheese wedges, chicken and lemongrass dumplings, and stuffed mushrooms for apps that will be butler passed during cocktail hour. They can ask if they don't know what's in the food. We aren't spending money on menus or programs.
