Appetizer Wedding

Jasmin, on June 19, 2013 at 1:41 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

My wedding is Next April. I'm having appetizers instead of an actual dinner. Wedding starts at 4 with the reception starting at 6. I'm planning on inviting 136 people. This is what I have as food: 150 Chicken Skewers, 150 Cheese quesadillas, and Chips and cheese dip.

For desserts I have 150 Fudge browines, 150 mini cheesecakes, 150 vanilla almond cupcakes.

Opinion: Do you think that's enough or should I order more? I want my guests to be full even if we're not serving dinner.

Personally I don't think that is enough. We are doing a dinner, and we have 3-4 appetizers for our cocktail hour to go with it. If you're not doing dinner, you should definitely have more selection for appetizers if you want them to be full. The ones you have sound good though!

Have you considered moving your wedding to earlier in the day? Since you are serving appetizers, people may leave to go out to dinner, making your reception very short, I'm afraid. The time you have scheduled may have your guests thinking that they will be served dinner at that time, as that is the schedule for most dinner receptions. Do you plan to have dancing and have your guests stay for a few hours? Even bumping the ceremony up to 2:00 or 3:00 would make a difference; then they can eat, greet and dance awhile before leaving for dinner.

I'm sorry if I'm way off base with this. An appetizer wedding reception can be very elegant!

I think you need a lot more of you want people to stay. That pretty much works out to one chicken skewer & one cheese quesadilla slice per person plus dessert. If someone doesn't like one of those they would be so hungry! 6 o'clock is typically dinner time. I'd order either a lot more, or order a few more things and move the reception to afternoon or late evening.

Not enough. Not even close. (I used to be a caterer....)

Move your ceremony to the afternoon, and tell people on the invites that they should join you for "cocktails and hors d'oeuvres following" so the know what to expect.... but consider that you need AT LEAST 10 hors d'oeuvres per person.

Think about yourself; would you be happy with two pieces of food and three desserts at dinner time? No.

I love appy weddings, and they work out really well, but you definitely need more food. Maybe a pasta station or even mini wrap/sandwich platters, but honestly, I'd move it to earlier.

Ditto Ditto Ditto. Is this being catered? Or is someone (friend or family) making all this? If it's the latter I suggest going to Sam's Club and buying more party trays. They tend to be the least expensive when it comes to bulk.

I would do a lot more food, we're having a sit down dinner and we're serving 5 different appetizers plus a cheese station and a cured meats station during the cocktail hour. People will want to eat a lot more since everything is going to be bite size.

Hi, I think an appetizer wedding can easily be done and would be fun but I agree with the other ladies, I would move your wedding up to the afternoon. I think people would leave to go to dinner. It is rude to have a wedding at supper time and just serve appetizers and expect your guest to stay.

What if I moved the wedding to a later time and have this: – Fresh Vegetables with Dip, Fresh Fruit Skewers with Dip, Cheese Quesadillas, Grilled Chicken Skewers, Mexican Queso dip with Tortilla Chips, Buffalo Chicken Dip with Gourmet Crackers, and Fresh Salsa with Tortilla Chips. The desserts would stay the same.

The place that I'm going with only does appetizers and desserts so I'm limited in what I can have, but I don't want my guests to be starving either.

Even if you move the wedding to a later time, say starting at 7PM, you have to take into consideration that guests will also have to get ready and arrive, which means they may be eating at 5-5:30PM

But overally, I think having an appetizer reception is perfectly acceptable if you state "light reception to follow" on your invites

That works too, and sounds really yummy!

In case adding more variety impacts your budget, one thing to think of - make sure you have enough of each item. I've been to weddings where they chose a lot of variety, but since there wasn't a large volume of each item, you might not get any or only one of something you really liked.

I am having a heavy appetizer and dessert wedding (tea party theme), but our ceremony is at 1 and the reception from 2-5. Is it possible to change the time of day? I think that if your reception is at dinner time, you should serve a full dinner. Also, if you stick to serving just appetizers then I think you should have a lot more. Our menu consists of smoked salmon and bruschetta, chicken almond tea sandwhiches, pea salad, green salad, fruit salad, veggie tray, herb & cheese scones, cranberry orange scones, mini fruit tarts, honey cake, waffle cake, cookies and the wedding cake/cupcakes. I'm also considering adding a few more things.
