Anyone random show up?

I feel like I’ve asked similar questions in the past, but over the weekend we were with one of our close friends and he is single and we didn’t give him a plus one. He is sort of a free spirit so to speak and doesn’t always understand proper etiquette. For example, he didn’t RSVP, and he said yeah just put me down for chicken. I was like just go to the website and RSVP. He was like nah I’m not gonna do that just put me down for chicken 😂. I don’t mind because we know how he is and he really just doesn’t get it sometimes… So as we continue to talk he mentioned the wedding again and said yeah I asked so-and-so if she wanted to go with me to be my date, but she backed out so I was going to ask so-and-so but I don’t think I am....! I’m like… OK, well make sure you let us know whoever you decide to invite so that way they don’t just randomly show up and we don’t have chairs for them etc.

He said OK yeah I’ll let you know… The issue is that I can totally see him just showing up with someone without telling us. He’s a close friend, and we definitely can be more stern/straight up with him but i’m worried about other people possibly doing this too?? We’re seeing him Friday so we’re going to reiterate our point again about if he decides to bring someone to let us know by X date so we can add them on.
In addition to this, has anyone ever had people RSVP no and then show up? Would it be a good idea for us to add extra head counts on in case? I can really only picture a very SMALL handful of ppl doing this...(mostly some of FHs cousins).

We didn’t experience this at all and honestly if people had shown up after saying no to the rsvp, they wouldn’t have had a chair or a meal and I wouldn’t have felt bad about it. Our venue set the tables for the amount of people we paid for. No way was I giving them hundreds to thousands more just in case extra people showed up.

I did experience people coming that i didn't expect but they were kids. for instance one of my husband's friends we invited them with their daughter but they rsvp no for their daughter... so when she showed up that caught me off guard. we had the amount of food but it's like the seating messes up ya know? and she's like 5, so she needs an actual seat.

We didn't have any surprises day of, but a few days before, we had 1 couple who RSVPed yes (my parents friends) who were flying from out of town and had an unexpected emergency, so they were out and then my brother's wife (they had just gotten married less than a year prior after dating for not very long) asked if one of her son's could bring a friend (not a girlfriend, but a friend). I was fine with adding her, but I would have preferred if they had asked sooner than 2 days before the wedding!

We had an uninvited guest show up. Our venue was DIY so it was easy to grab an extra chair. We also had a no show (emergency at the last minute) so head count wise it worked out. One of our guests were an older couple and there was forecasted winter weather in the evening of our wedding, so they brought their adult son to drive them. *supposedly* they told MIL who said it wasn’t a problem (she didnt pay for anything) no one thought to tell/ask us. I’m still mad about it 2 years later.

There’s free spirit and there’s just being ridiculous. If it’s true that this guy does not understand basic social conventions, he needs to get a book and learn. “Put me down for chicken” good lord. He’s going to have to learn to be a grown up at some point!
