Anyone not bustle their dress?

Anna, on May 13, 2019 at 9:05 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
So I had my alterations done and got my dress hemmed and the shoulder straps shortened, but didn't ask for a bustle and my tailor didn't bring it up. I was still considering just chopping the train off. Now I'm going to keep the train, and I already have my dress back from alterations. Am I making a huge mistake? The train isn't crazy, but it's there. Do I need to bustle? I'm attaching a couple of pictures of a real bride wearing it and the only pic I have of myself in it.

Thanks in advance!

I think you're going to want a bustle or one of those steps that go around your wrist to hold the dress up. I'm sure there will be someone on here that can give you a first hand account of bustle v no bustle.

My dress has a wrist strap under the train and that’s all I’m using! I don’t plan to dance much at our reception though... if I did, I would definitely do a full bustle. Maybe you could just sew a wrist strap onto yours?

If you don't do anything, you and other people will step on it. Possibly causing them or you to trip, possibly damaging your dress as well.

You're going to want a bustle. An under bustle is really easy to do, if you're at all handy with a needle and thread.

People will step on that and it is going to tear your dress.

I recommend a bustle or wrist strap. It gets annoying with the train dragging behind. People with step on it and can damage your dress. Plus it helps keep it off floor and easier to pee. Just speaking from previous experience

If you are having dancing or a lot of people I would definitely do something. Given the material, you may want to do a wrist strap instead of a bustle.

Thanks for all the feedback! I will probably be doing a lot of dancing, so maybe I need to go back to my tailor and have him throw a simple bustle in. I wish I would have thought of it sooner 😩

Oh, my goodness, YES! If you're going to want to dance, you are REALLY going to want a bustle. How complicated it is will depend on the length of your train and how many layers of fabric there are. Daughter's dress was a very full skirted a-line, with at least 5-6 layers of fabric in the skirt/train (not including the several layers of attached crinoline). The outer lace & tulle layers of daughter's dress had a 3-point over bustle and the under layers/satin lining went into a 3 point under bustle. She danced like a CRAZY woman all night. Even with the bustle (which looked great), at some point later in the night the back edge of the tulle layer got stepped on, which ended up tearing the tulle at the bustle points and we used large safety pins to fix the bustle so she could get back out on the dance floor. (It's also kind of weird, because the EXACT same thing happened to my wedding dress/bustle/train 30+ years ago....) For an experience alterations person, a bustle shouldn't take long. Good luck!

I would definitely recommend getting a bustle! My friend got married last month, and her train was about the length of yours. It kept getting stepped on all night and was incredibly dirty towards the end of the night.
