Anyone have experience with seeds or plants as wedding favors?

Cassie, on July 16, 2021 at 9:55 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

I'm doing a garden wedding, and I'm very much an environmentalist. There's of course some waste that is inevitable with big events but I want to have some sort of positive contribution to the environment to atone for this. So I thought maybe giving out seeds or plants for wedding favors. Has anyone done this and can you share any tips? Like what goes over well and what doesn't? Do people hate plant gifts? etc.

I think they're very hit or miss. I went to a wedding once where they gave out little potted succulents. No one took them, and so they had like 100+ succulents. Also, I know, for me, I have nowhere to plant things. I live in an apartment with no green space. So I would consider your guest list and how they would react. Overall, I think favors are something you can just cut all together.

One of my cousins spent quite some time before her wedding propagating herb cuttings and used them as favours which also doubled as place cards at the tables. Pretty sure most people took theirs home and if there were any left, someone else grabbed them (she had five or six different herbs so people got different ones). She is a plant breeder/scientist by trade so it was very ‘her’ but I thought it was a great idea regardless!

I would say they're very hit or miss. I once attended a wedding with potted succulents as the favor, and all of the out of town guests had to throw them in the trash later because we couldn't take them on the airplane. It was sad sight to see between 30 and 40 adorable succulents literally in the trash can. I suppose it would depend on your guest list for seeds--I certainly wouldn't take seeds because I live in an apartment without a space to plant anything. I can only envision plants or seeds working as a favor if the overwhelming majority of your guests are local and if they live in houses or homes with outdoor space. If you have out of town guests or a significant number of people who live in apartments, then I'd go back to the drawing board and choose a different favor. In general, I've found edible favors to be the most successful at weddings.

Oh the flights! That's a good point. In regard to space most of our guests live in spaces that allow for gardens. But almost all of our guests will be coming from other states. So live plants are probably not ideal. Are their rules against bringing seeds on domestic US flights? I just googled it and couldn't find any clear info, most of what I saw was about international flights.

Edible favors is also a good plan B though!

I think this would just contribute to more waste since most people wouldn’t plant them. To eliminate waste, eliminate favors - most people throw them away.

I'd skip the favors. Not everyone is a gardener or has the space or interest to plan seeds

I have received seeds several times for shower favors. Once, it was a pod that came in a small pot, once it was a packet of seeds, once it was seeds in a small tin, once it was a tree sapling that you could plant. All went in the trash. I am friendly with many people who attended these events. I know of only 1 person, one time who actually grew them. Maybe my family are an anomaly, but I personally would not waste my money. For an environmentally friendly favor, I would go with a food product or none at all. People usually don't miss the favor.

I don't have anywhere to plant anything and I'm terrible at keeping plants alive, so it wouldn't be ideal for me, but it's a cute idea. One time I received little hearts cut out of paper with seeds embedded in them that said something about planting/growing love and instructions on how to plant them. You could probably do something like that without a lot of waste.

We're thinking of doing something similar. Both our families are into gardening, so it works. We're doing succulents for local folks and seed bombs for out of towners.
