Anyone have any song suggestions that would sound great on a harp?

We're having a harpist for our ceremony and I am so excited! She has a few songs listed with recordings on her site, but they're all very traditional songs, ones that you would typically find in the church. My fiance and I are not particularly religious and would like some more contemporary modern songs to be played. If anyone out there is also having a harpist-any song suggestions are welcome!

A harp is a very classical instrument, so I think finding a harpist that plays contemporary music will be next to impossible. Has she even said she would be willing to learn new songs for you? Usually when you hire a musician, it's because you like the music they already play.

Ok, question - is Ave Maria too "religous" for you? I've heard it on a harp and it's just gorgeous. It's my taste but it may not be what you're looking for. Just asking!

She said she would be willing to learn new songs before I even booked her, hence my question! She said she just needs sheet music. I think she plays beautifully from the recordings I’ve heard, but as you said, it’s hard to find a harpist that automatically plays contemporary music, though I did find a few. She was the most talented imo, and also the closest.

I was recently at a bridal showcase in NY and the harpist was playing contemporary music. It was so freakin awesome!!! Two of my favorites were All of Me by John Legend and A Thousand Years by Christina Perri.

That sounds awesome. You really could do any popular, slower song such as Perfect by Ed Sheeran. I can totally imagine it!

That’s actually one of the songs we’re actually considering that’s in her repertoire. I agree-so beautiful!

    Some thoughts:

    Free - Zac Brown Band

    Amazed - Lonestar

    Faithfully - Journey (my favorite - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gG33ugExU7o)

    I'm Yours - Jason Mraz

From this moment - Shania Twain

I'd stay go to youtube and search for harp covers - there are some great ones!

Almost anything that sounds nice on an acoustic guitar could be played by a harpist if they are willing to learn new music. And if they are very good, I would wager that a lot of popular music isn't terribly tricky.

We actually had a harpist play a blend of classic and contemporary music.

Some more classical that we used:

    Gavotte by Salzedo

    The Prayer by Foster

    Canon in D by Pachelbel

    And contemporary or contemporary-ish:

    Phantom of the Opera

    Beauty and the Beast

    Ed Sheeran

The Twilight theme song (lol.... I am ashamed)

I would look around on Youtube for ideas and see what the possibilities are. I love the harp! Some things that sound a little trite on piano or on a sound system sound lovely on the harp. It ended up being one of my surprise favorite parts of the day, and it wasn't even something I was all that jazzed about originally.
