Anyone ever add lace to a laceless dress? Cost?

Val, on April 11, 2019 at 6:04 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
So I always imagined my dream dress having lace on it but all the lace ones I liked were out of my budget so I ended up getting a tulle dress instead, which I loved and that really surprised me because I’d never even considered that type of dress. But I’ve been having second thoughts ever since I bought it back in January. It’s a trumpet style and I was thinking maybe I can add some lace (not too much) on the bottom, where the flare/train is. I do love my dress as is but I’m trying to add this little extra that I always imagined my dream dress having.
My appointment with my seamstress is at the end of June and I already brought up this idea to her and she said it probably could be done.

ok too much talking; My question is, has anyone ever done anything like this and how much did it cost? Wondering how much I should start saving if anything or if it’ll just be completely out of my budget lol. Thank you!

It depends on what lace you buy and how much. I had my dress custom made and I really wanted more lace on it but the amount of lace I needed would have cost upwards of around $800 just for the fabric not to mention the labor. This would have been for the torso, 3/4 sleeves, and lace around the bottom of the skirt. I decided just to get enough lace for the torso and sleeves. My seamstress charged $45 per hour for labor. This was high quality lace but not the highest quality lace which would have been double that! I would ask your seamstress how many yards of lace she thinks you need and ask her where she recommends you buy it. My total fabric cost for the silk chiffon, lace, tulle and lace edging for my veil was a little over $1000.

Wow, beautiful!! That dress looks amazing on you and love your bouquet colors too. I keep wondering if I should’ve just gone custom too; didn’t realize alterations could be so expensive haha. Thanks for the input!

Thank you! Yes, alterations can range upwards of $1000! My dress and veil total came to about $2500 - fabric + labor. Lace is so expensive and difficult to work with. My seamstress recommended to buy the highest quality lace I could so it is easier to work with, but even then it has to be cut in certain places to keep the lace design intact.
