Anyone else's FH wearing a kilt?

Kelly, on September 28, 2015 at 10:47 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I just recently found out how badly my FH wants to wear

a kilt, how would you handle this surprise? I'm not sure

how traditional plans to be with it all.

My husband did not because it wouldn't make any sort of sense for him too but it is more popular on my side of the family and with some friends. I think that's pretty cool and if he's doing it he might as well go full traditional! It'll look great!

Edit: After reading Brandee's comment, maybe not FULL traditional.

Mine is and so will all of his groomsmen most likely. I wasn't sure how to take it, but he really has his heart set on it. It makes him happy, so am willing to work with it. But talk it out with him once you figure out how you feel about it. I just made FH promise to not be too traditional with it. One good breeze outside and guests would see more than they planned.

ETA: spelling and to say that FH is going to dress a lot like MoonRide's man did in above picture.

    @Moonride, love that picture!

I could not get FH in one - but I hired a piper! I am very proud of the fact I am Scottish but FH is Scotch/Irish/German so he was like "meh". Smiley smile

FH isn't for the wedding, because we're doing more 1950s attire, but I'd be down for a kilt!

In fact, our officiant will be wearing one. Smiley laugh

we were recently in a wedding where all the men work kilts, and it was sharp! I love a man in a kilt, so I might be biased though. Smiley laugh

My dad will be wearing his solid black dress kilt and everything that goes with it. He's walking me down the aisle and then performing the ceremony. It's going to be the only celtic touch other than our handfasting, so it probably will see out of place, but I don't care. It was my dad's idea, and I love it.

That's my dad on the right. He performed my the ceremony for my stepbrother, but I'm the only one he's walking down the aisle in his kilt, and I want him to carry his sword, too. Isn't he cute?

Mine did! We had a terrrrible experience with our rental though. It was through ScotYard kilt rentals. I would not recommend them. There were none local to us, and the last kilt he owned he has long outgrown. The company sent us TWO kilts in completely the wrong size, and the only way he was able to wear it was our DOC put a temporary alteration in. (Life saver!!!) He changed out of it for the reception.

We did a full traditional Scottish ceremony with the cup, tartan hand fasting, ect. (His mother grew up in the UK, he is first generation American.)

FH wants to wear one, I'm trying to steer him towards sticking with a suit - simply cause it's gonna be bitterly cold and probably blowing a gale at the time of the wedding. Then again, I'm born and bred scottish and FH has lived here since he was younger so it wasn't too much of a surprise when he voiced wanting to wear a kilt. He was already super on board with the quaich and ceilidh.

There's nothing traditional about free balling under a kilt (which sounds plain hazardous, what with the sporran probably swinging too... Ouch!). Any true scotsman knows it's saltire boxers if there's any chance of a a windy day. Or tartan if they're feeling fancy. Smiley smile

If he wants to wear a kilt - get or rent a quality one (not one that scrimped on pleats or used far too light of a wool). You may find it's a bit more pricey than a suit or tux, depending on the tartan, but if he wants to wear one then it's worth it.

I love it. If my DH wanted to wear one, I would have been on board with it. Kilts are fantastic and look great.

Mine will be! I am on board with it. I'm trying to convince my mother that it won't be a disaster if we pick wedding colors that are not in the tartan.

I wish mine did- our family is very scottish- my dad would love it. But he and his family are Syrian/Lebanese- and he isn't traditional at all- so no gabalaya/dishdasha- although if he really wanted to wear it- who am I to stop him.

@Uber Dami I'm doing my best to get my FH some killer boots though to go with the kilt.

Not sure yet what his overall vision is though. Haha

@Nicole @Allison @ MoonRide thank you for sharing your pictures.

@Yasminadlv now that would be one great picture to see.
