We had planned a honeymoon in Aruba for just after our November wedding (actually first it was the Caymans, then it didn’t look like they would reopen in time so we rebooked for Aruba, then the Caymans announced they WERE reopening ON our wedding date, but by then we were more excited about Aruba so we stuck with it). We were also planning on starting TTC right away.
A few days after the wedding / before the honeymoon I was reading a TTC book that mentioned Zika, and I figured it was bc the book was published a few years ago - I hadn’t heard anyone talk about Zika in a long time and my OB/GYN knew what our plans were, so I thought she would’ve warned me if it was still an issue. But I looked it up just to be sure and nope, Aruba is still on the CDC’s watch list along with basically every other destination we had considered.
So I call my doctor’s office, they are unsure at first but look into it and call me back saying they recommend we don’t go, but if we can’t change our plans we should wear long sleeves / pants (in 80+ degree weather, sounds fun) and use lots of bug spray. Then get tested for the virus when we come back and if we got it, particularly if he did, we’d have to wait SIX months before trying. I’m 36 going on 37 and want multiple kids - I was not going to wait that long. I’m also a mosquito magnet, there’s zero chance I wouldn’t get bitten so even if there’s a good chance I wouldn’t have gotten the virus from those bites, the anxiety would’ve ruined the experience for both of us.
So 4 days before our departure date, we rebooked for Maui - and it was beautiful, we didn’t have to worry about Zika and neither of us regrets it, but MAN that was one last kick in the teeth from some random virus that we did not need at the end of 2021, LOL. Anyone else surprised by this, or am I the only idiot who didn’t know I still had to avoid travel to places with a past history of Zika if I want to get pregnant anytime soon?!
