Anyone else not know Zika was still a concern?

Elizabeth, on December 28, 2021 at 11:49 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 13
We had planned a honeymoon in Aruba for just after our November wedding (actually first it was the Caymans, then it didn’t look like they would reopen in time so we rebooked for Aruba, then the Caymans announced they WERE reopening ON our wedding date, but by then we were more excited about Aruba so we stuck with it). We were also planning on starting TTC right away.

A few days after the wedding / before the honeymoon I was reading a TTC book that mentioned Zika, and I figured it was bc the book was published a few years ago - I hadn’t heard anyone talk about Zika in a long time and my OB/GYN knew what our plans were, so I thought she would’ve warned me if it was still an issue. But I looked it up just to be sure and nope, Aruba is still on the CDC’s watch list along with basically every other destination we had considered.
So I call my doctor’s office, they are unsure at first but look into it and call me back saying they recommend we don’t go, but if we can’t change our plans we should wear long sleeves / pants (in 80+ degree weather, sounds fun) and use lots of bug spray. Then get tested for the virus when we come back and if we got it, particularly if he did, we’d have to wait SIX months before trying. I’m 36 going on 37 and want multiple kids - I was not going to wait that long. I’m also a mosquito magnet, there’s zero chance I wouldn’t get bitten so even if there’s a good chance I wouldn’t have gotten the virus from those bites, the anxiety would’ve ruined the experience for both of us.
So 4 days before our departure date, we rebooked for Maui - and it was beautiful, we didn’t have to worry about Zika and neither of us regrets it, but MAN that was one last kick in the teeth from some random virus that we did not need at the end of 2021, LOL. Anyone else surprised by this, or am I the only idiot who didn’t know I still had to avoid travel to places with a past history of Zika if I want to get pregnant anytime soon?!

Wow - I’m with you. They stopped talking about it and I had no idea it was still a thing to be worried about. I would’ve done the same thing as you, but how stressful to do it last minute.

Thanks for the information! Apparently my FH and I will be waiting until next August to TTC. I'll be 35 at that point. I wonder where your doctor got 6 months from because the CDC website says 3 months? Hmmm

I think they do recommend 3 months for women, but for men the virus can apparently live in sperm longer. When they said 6 months they were referring to the risk for men transmitting the virus through sex.

Can't you just get tested to see if you have it or is that not an option?

You can, that’s what they told us. But you’re rolling the dice bc if you test positive you’d have to wait months to TTC. If you test negative theoretically you wouldn’t have to wait, but that wasn’t a risk I was even remotely willing to take.

Glad I’m not the only one! Yeah it was not a fun experience having to change everything last minute but shockingly it worked out, same travel dates and everything.

Understandable! Thank you so much for the info. I'm glad I stumbled upon this post this morning because I would've never even considered this before TTC

Glad I could help! Def talk to your OB/GYN and see what they say, you could get a different answer. Mine said if we went, they could test me when we got back and DH could ask his doctor do it. The kicker for me was they were telling us to use condoms on our HM bc the virus can be passed sexually - I wasn’t on BC anymore and we’d already technically started trying, so I could have been pregnant already. I wasn’t, but it was too early to test and confirm that, so my hands were tied. I think it’d be fine if you’re not TTC and you’re on BC so pregnancy is unlikely to happen, but they may still tell you to use condoms on the HM / until you can get tested, which just felt a little depressing to me for a HM.

My doctor would not let us continue fertility treatments until 3 months after we returned from the Dominican due to Zika. This was in 2021.

Ugh, that is a bummer. Did they warn you about this before you went? I was really surprised that I didn't get any forewarning when I told my doctor where we were going and that we'd be trying to conceive while we were there or immediately after. It wasn't until I stumbled upon some info and specifically called and asked about the risk that they advised me not to go.

We actually switched doctors prior to our trip, and part of the initial paperwork asked if we were going out of the country where Zika was present. That is what made us look into it further. Since we said yes, the doctor said we had to wait 3 months before seeing him to continue our fertility treatments. I also checked with our previous doctor, and she agreed with what he said. It definitely sucked when we had already been TTC with no success for almost a year (our honeymoon was delayed due to Covid). We are now starting IVF this month.

Yes, that makes sense a fertility practice would have forms that specifically ask about it. Maybe it’s not prominent enough anymore for OB/GYN’s who deal with all sorts of issues other than pregnancy to think of it. I would’ve thought since I was specifically there to have an IUD removed and talk about my conception plans, it would’ve come up when I mentioned traveling to Aruba, but it didn’t. Glad I discovered it on my own, I guess.
