Anyone else moving abroad after their wedding?

Annie, on October 23, 2016 at 7:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 3

My FH proposed to me 3 weeks ago today Smiley smile We're planning a wedding in the US, and then I'll join him in France, where he lives now. After 18 months of a trans-Atlantic relationship (and another 10 months until we get married) I'm SO ready to close the gap, but at the same time, I'm overwhelmed. I've lived abroad for 7 years now, but I've always had a job or study visa, and this time the most likely option is a visa for a spouse which can't be processed until after we're married. We won't have the vacation days to hang out in the US until all the paperwork is processed, and I don't want to get married and keep being long distance til it's ready. I'm hoping we can just process the visa in France, but from what I've seen so far, that doesn't look possible. I'm wondering if we'll actually have to get married weeks or months before on another visit to get a jump start on processing the visa, but I don't like that idea either. Anyone have any experience with this? What did you do?

Can you process the visa while in 'vacation' in France?

I have absolutely no idea how these things work...I mean...could you theoretically go on vacation to France while it's processing and just have someone keep you updated on any mail?

That might be a possibility Mrs. K! You don't HAVE to leave your passport at the embassy while they process the visa, so theoretically I guess I could go to France and be there for up to 90 days as a "tourist", I'd just have to fly back and go to pick up the visa at the embassy when it's ready, so it's not ideal, but I guess that beats spending my first 5 or 6 weeks as a married woman on the other side of the world as my husband staying at my parents' house Smiley winking (I'm really hoping that when my FH goes to the town hall to ask, there will be an option for just processing the whole thing in France that I haven't found online)
