Anyone else catering their own reception? Perhaps with family help? Buffet style ?

Ok so we’re gonna cater our own reception (well really our immediate family) and it’s gonna be buffet style. I’m having such a hard time deciding what to include / take out of the menu considering we both come from families who can really throw down in the kitchen.

rice & peas, yellow rice, white rice, Dahl, Mac & cheese, baked ziti, 3 meat lasagna, candied yams, cabbage, corn on the cob, bbq wings, baked chicken, mango habanero wings, turkey wings, fried talapia (either fried chicken or baked salmon) macaroni salad, potato salad, chicken pasta salad & deviled eggs. For most events this is how we eat, we wanted to make sure there’s something for everyone

I would pick one kind of food and choose 5 dishes. Or you could do the "Indian" dishes for the main courses and have the more "American" foods as appetizers. My family an I are self catering my wedding too. We will have two BBQ meats and three sides plus bread.

You have a lot of variations on the same things in that list. Instead of having 5 pasta dishes, 5 types of rice and 5 types of chicken, you could pick one kind of each. You could also do it by cuisine. You have a lot of options I would consider bbq, so you could choose from those options and leave the rest. Or you think of it like courses instead of a potluck, especially since you may not have that many people. You could do a salad, maybe 2 sides and an entree choice for meat and no meat. My aunt is a chef and is doing my catering for 70 people, counting vendor meals. We are having a cheese and cracker tray with bacon wrapped dates for cocktail hour, salad, posole, and three choices of soft tacos: pork, shrimp, and veggie. I also consider candied yams to be a dessert and would probably skip it if you're also serving cake.
