Dedicated September 2020

Anyone else an emotional wreck?

Gabrielle, on September 7, 2019 at 11:46 AM Posted in Planning 0 6

We just got engaged 2 weeks ago so we're in the process of deciding what kind of wedding we'd like to have.

We're also doing a lot of extra ground work in term of getting to know each other at a much deeper level (think premarital counselling) and setting a good foundation.

I'm keeping a list of songs I'd like on our playlist and options for first dance/aisle and everytime I hear something beautiful I start tearing up. Yesterday whilst driving to work Taylor Swift's "Lover" started playing and I literally cried in the car!

Everything's been overwhelming because I'm incredibly happy and excited and of course everyone has their own opinions. Normal? Or is it just me Smiley ups

Normal! Congrats, by the way. 🎉 Have you reviewed the WeddingWire checklists? Those can help you get organized (and not freak out as much).

These first big decisions will help make the others easier: 1) set a budget, 2) estimate a guest list, 3) choose a venue.

    Welcome here!!!

Thank you! We've already started doing #2 to see what kind of numbers we're looking at, and started getting quotes from venues. Luckily our friends are getting married in April and they offered to share their price lists with us.

Very exciting! Venue pricing made me cry. So much money. But here’s what I learned that might help.

    * a brunch wedding can cost 30-50% less than dinner
    * a non-Saturday evening is typically less (Friday night or early Sunday afternoon/evening are good options if you want an evening wedding)
    * off-season can be cheaper, off-season is different for different regions/venues (for example, ski resorts are expensive in winter, wineries expensive in summer).

How many guests are you thinking thus far?

I think it's normal. I've had a few panic attacks as we are planning. We have our ceremony music and our first dance song picked, and every time I hear them I tear up. They have a whole deeper meaning now.

I was thinking 100-150, but my parents are trying to convince me that smaller would be better. They think the money should be spent on the honeymoon, which I agree with. At this point I might be happier eloping but I really want to have an actual wedding.
My parents are questioning whether we understand the true commitment of marriage and as usual are being less than supportive. I think that is putting a lot of stress on me.

That’s weird your parents think you don’t understand commitment when you’re doing premarital counseling type of stuff.

If you want a big wedding, go for it! But a big wedding does cost more not just in food/drinks but any rental items (place settings, chairs, linens) and other per-person items (place/escort cards, menus, programs, etc). You could host a simple cake & punch reception at a non-meal time, or lunch/dinner catering by an Italian/BBQ/Mexican restaurant for $10-$20 per person (if you get married in a church or temple, the reception hall is often only a few hundred dollars to rent).

But chat with your fiancé about what you both want then go from there.
