Anyone dye their veil ivory using tea? Tips?

A Bride, on July 29, 2016 at 7:48 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 23

Bride on a budget here. I ordered a veil online that said it was "ivory" but it actually looks bright white. I only paid about $10 or $15 dollars on it so it's not a huge loss, but the cost of shipping it back doesn't really seem worth it to me.

I saw online that you can dye your veil ivory using tea or even coffee. Has anyone ever done this? Any advice? How long did you keep it in the liquid? Did it streak while drying? Another site I found said nylon doesn't take dye so you soak it in vinegar for a few hours first? (honestly I'm not even positive what material my veil is though)

It's on my list of weekend projects. If it fails, I can just get a new veil but hopefully that won't be the case. I can take some pictures and post them if I'm successful.

Ive never heard of that but i might try it! mine is the same way plus sequins to remove. I also tried it on the other day and just hated the veil because I don't like looking out and feeling like i have smudges on my glasses or something.

I recommend seeing if you can find a small piece of the same kind of fabric or mesh and try it on that first.

I have the same problem! Please let me know how it works out for you! My grandmother thinks we should try dying just plain tule first and see how it works before the veil.

I would be worried about the tea and coffee leaving residue on your dress the day of if it rubs off your veil. Even if you rinse it out, there could still be residue.

Tulle material is really difficult to dye!

Try googling how to dye tulle, which is most likely very synthetic.

I've never heard of that technique, but I'd try it on something else first, maybe a similar piece of material if you have it. Could leave stains on the veil, making it look sort of dirty. Be very careful, if you do go through with it. Doing a bit at a time.

I did used tea. It was supper easy and it really didnt get to dark fast. I recommended finding a scrap of tulle or only letting it sit for a minute at a time. Also compare it to something that you consider ivory. There is a fine line between ivory and that yellow dingy color.

I would be worried it would dye unevenly or be splotchy. Maybe trying it in several stages would help limit that risk?

What length is the veil? Mine is a finger tip with blusher.

If the veils are made of thin fine material, it should not come out splotchy. Use a large tub (that you can completly submerge you veil in and make sure you make enough dye (i use 2 medium cooking pots to make the dye and a large one to put the veil and die in) . Moving it around will make sure the dye is all over. If you do it in sections you are more likely to make the sections different color.

I'm looking for a before and after pic, but I think I deleted them so FH wouldnt see...

My daughter wore a gorgeous, very expensive, Maggie Sottero gown dripping with crystals. She has porcelain skin, had tried on few beautiful white gowns, but she disappeared in them. She finally selected her champagne (almost gold) Maggie, and she looked gorgeous. The problem was finding a veil that matched that wouldn't cost a fortune (it's just a veil). She ordered a very inexpensive veil online and decided to dye it in tea. If it didn't work -- no big deal. The veil was less than $30.

She filled the kitchen sink with hot water, dropped in a bunch of Lipton tea bags, and then she put the veil in the dark water. She checked the veil against the gown every five minutes or so, and, of course, she swished the veil around in the water. It was a while ago, but I think it took about 20 - 30 minutes to get the exact color she wanted. The trick is to keep checking and moving the veil around for even color distribution. When the color looked right, she drained the sink, gave it one cold water rinse, put it outside to dry in the air, and the result was a perfect match.

That's my experience. It worked. I hope it works for you.

@Elphaba or Centerpiece, how do you keep the dye from bleeding if the veil gets wet again (e.g., if it rains)?

I might be trying the same with mine. My sister is letting me use hers, but it's bright white and my dress is, well, not. BTW, she was the one who suggested that I dye it. Please, don't throw things at me. Smiley winking

I had a gross old veil that I dyed pink for her bach party. I can't remember exactly what I used (may have been a really, really diluted Rit dye). I did almost exactly what Centerpiece suggested, but it didn't take nearly that long. It came out pretty well. No blotchiness, no streaks, didn't rub off. I rinsed it very well and patted it with a white cloth to be sure the color wouldn't come off. Worked like a charm.

This isn't really what you asked, but if the dying doesn't work I noticed a lot of etsy shops allow you to order fabric swatches so you can make sure you order the right color to match your dress.

Update: Tried to dye my veil this morning and will probably be doing it again in a few days.

My biggest fear was that it was going to turn too yellow and I'd ruin it, but I actually had the opposite issue where the veil did not take on the color very well and I had it soaking for about 40 minutes. I thought it would take like 5 minutes and I was wrong. Haha. I'm okay with that and would still suggest playing it safe when dyeing because you can always add more color but can't undo it if you add too much. When I do it again I will need to make a more concentrated tea solution because mine was not strong enough (3 tea packets in the largest pot I had) I think that I will need to double it to 6 or more next time in my case. Overall, it did take some of the tea color, but it is not at the point I'd like yet.

Yeah, I think it's supposed to look a lot more brown than this but I was so scared of making a yellow veil! Maybe it was the type of tea I used? Or I just needed a lot more of if.
