Anyone doing that thing where you greet your guests as they enter reception?

So I'm not having a cocktail hour (there's a huge, UNAVOIDABLE gap between ceremony and reception so not having a gap or having a cocktail hour isn't really an option). My questions are 1. Are you planning on doing that welcoming line thing? 2. Where should it go (before or after the welcome/sign-in table, etc.)? and 3. Who is normally in it besides the bride and groom, of course? Any other advice/suggestions are welcome!

We didn't plan on it. Our ceremony and reception were in the same room. Our whole WP and OOT guests arrived with us on a shuttle. I went upstairs to get some touch ups and DH began greeting people with his uncle as they arrived. DH uncle was in charge of the red envelopes. My sister and her bf took over our Instax Mini guestbook and began snapping away as guests entered as well. After my touch up I joined DH and his uncle and also greeted the last of the guests as they arrived. Once everyone was seated the WP gathered together, got in order and the ceremony began. After the ceremony cocktail hour immediately started.

@OP, I hate receiving lines. But I wasn't going to answer that since your gap is the problem.

I went to a wedding with a huge gap and it was really annoying. The ceremony was in a church at like 11am. We went back to the hotel and then decided to go grab lunch because the reception didn't start until 5pm! I was peeved, but whatever. I don't plan on doing a receiving line because they're awkward and remind me of the receiving lines at funeral visitations.

Stop blaming the Catholic Church. I've been to a dozen catholic weddings and only one had a gap. I hunted down a Catholic Church that allows for a later mass for my own wedding. It can be done, people.

We are doing one. The way our venue is set up the ceremony will be in the garden and then the reception is in the building (weather permitted). So our welcome line will be right at the stairs before people go onto the porch to where their seating assignments will be to enter the building. I've seen many different people in these lines from just bride and groom, to bride groom and parents, to the whole wedding party. So its completely up to you who you want in the welcoming line.
