Anyone cancelling their honeymoons?

Christina, on April 30, 2020 at 1:26 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 8
We bought our plane tickets back in December (I think) for a week in Hawaii in September this year. United just announced that they’re waiving cancellation and change fees for all flights in 2020, through May 31. I’m wondering if we should consider this. I like to think things will be better by September but these days, who knows?

Has anyone else had to cancel or reschedule their honeymoons?

Things are just so uncertain right now, I'm so sorry.

My best advice, currently, is: have a Plan B, be flexible, and try not to make decisions until you *have* to.

That said, if they are waiving cancellation fees for the rest of the year, it might be best to take advantage of that, stash the money in a savings account, and rebook when things are more certain.

We booked a cruise end of July lol! We cancelled but then only got cruise credit back which we have to use within a year. If things aren’t better maybe we will do a local trip that’s fun instead.... like an air b&b somewhere.

I pushed my honeymoon out from July to October in Disneyland but I highly doubt they will even be open. Will probably just go somewhere close to home and take a big trip next year.

I agree with PP that if they are waiving cancellation fees it makes sense for you to cancel and then repurchase when you have a better idea of whether traveling will be possible.

I know September seems a long time away, but I agree with others about taking advantage of an opportunity to cancel for now. I read an article yesterday about how aggressive Hawaii is currently being about trying to protect residents from visitors potentially bringing the virus with them to the islands. There is currently a two-week self-quarantine required of all visitors and people arriving in the last week who couldn't prove they had a plan for that were being immediately put on flights and sent home (in some cases Hawaii was actually paying for the flights to get them out...). The same article also included an interview with a family from the mainland who was staying in HI on vacation and was encountering resentment and harassment from locals who felt they were being put at risk by visitors. Hopefully, things will be much better, but I'd take the refund and wait and see where we are and how you're feeling about everything later.

We did a minimoon right after our wedding and were supposed to go to Ireland in late May. This has obviously been cancelled. We have not rescheduled this due to the uncertainties of traveling at this point.

We are supposed to go to Hawaii August 14th to 29th. This is exactly what we are worried about. We don't want to make the locals uncomfortable, etc. We have free cancellation until June 6th so we will decide then.
