Any tips for DIY bridal makeup?

F, on July 28, 2021 at 7:12 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 17
Hi all,
I live in a super small town and I cannot find anyone who does wedding makeup. Those who travel are not doing any **** appointments…… so I’m pretty sure I’m down to DIY.
I’ll start off by saying I literally only wear mascara and have never experimented much with full facial makeup. I wouldn’t even know where to begin for buying what is needed as well. Do you think an Ulta Beauty would be helpful in assisting me to find the right shades of products for my skin tone? Any tips for doing your own bridal makeup and not losing all your eyelashes with fake ones would be most helpful.I don’t have friends or family that can help either.

Are there no makeup artists at all, even if not bridal ones? If not, can you travel to a larger city and arrange an appointment with a makeup artist to learn how to do your own? Many department stores and makeup brands do 'how-to' sessions where the price covers the cost of the products, which you get to take home with you - this would be a good option for you!

It is totally possible to learn and do your own makeup for your wedding - Kate Middleton did hers on her wedding day!

I was going to suggest the same thing as Rosie. I’ve heard of professionals that offer classes so you can get a better idea of your skin type and what colors and ingredients work best for you. But yes, I do think someone at Ulta beauty should be able to help you find good products. Just don’t let them try to get you to buy the super expensive stuff. Sometimes when I go there and ask for recommendations they only talk about the higher end brands, when sometimes the less expensive version is better.

Try the Thumbtack App, you may be able
To find one there. You’re local make up counter like Mac and Sephora may also offer services.

Correct, there is no one within two hours of me who does makeup of any kind.
That’s a really great idea! I had no idea about the “how to’s” I’ll definitely have to try to find one in the bigger cities!
    Thanks

I was considering going to one of our “big” cities and trying a Sephora or ulta.

Learning more about my skin and what would look best from someone who knows better sounds like the best option.
It seems I’ll have to take a trip out of the area to find what I’m seeking. Smiley smile
I suppose if I can’t find anything even there good old YouTube may be able to help.

I love makeup, and for me personally, I've found it's trial and error finding products that last and you love. Some more expensive brands so really work better, but others don't, and without experience it's hard to know which is which. You can ask for samples of higher end foundations to find your shade and to see how it sits on the skin - I'd highly recommend doing that until you find a product you like the look of and feel confident with. My personal favourite for longevity and the way it sits on skin and photographs is estee lauder double wear - it's a heavier coverage foundation but it's been around for years and is a cult favourite for a reason. It dries down beautifully and doesn't crease, smudge or transfer. I also LOVE Chanel powder blushes. Yes, they are expensive, but they last YEARS and stay on the skin all day, so to me it's worth it.

Whatever else you buy, get yourself some setting spray. Urban Decay has a good one, but my absolute favourite is skindinavia - it's the setting spray synchronised swimmers use, so you know it's legit!

Watch YouTube tutorials for "natural" makeup or "no makeup makeup" looks. It will help you see different techniques and products and how they can be used and applied. A lot of lighter makeup looks don't involve a whole slew of products the way a full face glam look does, so I feel like watching those videos FIRST will help you avoid buying things you just don't need.

Additionally there are a ton of YouTube videos for makeup newbies, including ones like how to determine your skin undertone or find your perfect shade of foundation. Honestly YouTube can be a great resource!

I don't wear makeup often at all and did my own makeup for my wedding. YouTube was a huge help. That and a bit of practice!

I’ll definitely try to get some samples as well before committing to anything. 🙂

Great advice above, but I want to add PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Do it a bunch of times so that the day of you don't have to stress about how it will go! You'll also know how long it will take. This is also a great way to see if the makeup sits on your skin well after multiple hours, or if it gets oily or smudges.

Practice a lot! I highly recommend Allie Glines on YouTube. She has a bunch of bridal videos using products at various price points. Shelbey Wilson’s are also really good. I suggest practicing it around the same time you plan to do it on your day of to test longevity. Ulta and Sephora can help shade match you but you’ll definitely need to try stuff at home to be sure.

Everyone here has great advice, but also, take pictures of yourself in different lighting with the foundations you're trying! I have a foundation I used for family photos that looks great in everyday lighting but it photographed so terribly that my face looks like it's 2 shades lighter than the rest of my body and seems like it's glowing compared to everyone else lol. You don't want something like that to happen for your wedding photos!
