Any tips for adding straps, sleeves, or a back to a strapless dress?

b, on January 1, 2016 at 9:30 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

As you know most dresses are strapless these days. Has anyone had success in adding straps, sleeves or even a back to the dress? How did it turn out?

My goal is to get the dress to stay up (small chest LOL) and also cover a back/shoulder tattoo.

Thanks!

The bridal shop and/or your seamstress that will do your alterations should have suggestions. I was looking at adding lace straps to my dress, so it can definitely be done. If you don't find an option you like for having the dress customized, you can also look at boleros or other sleeved pieces that go on over your dress.

Adding sleeves or straps is a simple alteration for most styles. Just ask your bridal consultant and/or seamstress. A lot of times, they have straps to pin on to show you what it will look like.

Have you ordered your dress yet or even looked? There are lots of styles now with sleeves/straps and backs. I got a Maggie Sotterro Katiya, and it has beautiful straps and a lace back.

Keep looking, if that's what you really want!

ETA: I also have a shoulder tattoo, which is totally hidden with this back!

My good friend had great success with adding short sleeves to her strapless dress. They looked like they were originally part of the dress! So, it can definitely be done with the right seamstress.

My friend got married in October and bought gorgeous lace/sparkly straps on Etsy. Her grandmother was able to easily sew them on and it looked beautiful.

I shouldn't be too hard to add, but , but I'd keep looking. I see a LOT of dresses, lol, and to ME, it seems like more of my brides have not strapless dresses; some beautiful illusiona nd lace backs, short sleeps and cap sleeves. Keep in mind that alterations are more than anyone things (generally).

I'm adding cap sleeves to my dress. The bridal shop does it all the time. I do agree that it seems like there are a lot more dresses with sleeves these days, but I couldn't find one in the style I liked with sleeves.

Yes, my mother sewed on spaghetti straps that turned out beautiful! However, just the simple spaghetti strap was a lot more work than we anticipated. It took weeks to figure out which beaded strap we would use, and we had to send a few back that didn't end up being anything like the online photo. If you are 100% set on the dress then go for it, but I'd recommend a professional. Smiley smile

You need to consult a seamstress before purchasing a dress to see if it would even be a possibility.
