Any regrets doing your own hair/makeup?

Mallory, on November 2, 2017 at 3:53 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

Has anyone who has done their own hair and makeup regretted not spending the money to hire someone? I feel like its an easy way for me to save a couple hundred, and plus I feel like I'll be able to achieve my preferred look much better than someone else.

I am wondering the same thing, I want to do my own make up, just not sure I want to tackle hair too.

I've been wondering too in regards to the makeup. I'm not an expert by any means but I also want to keep my makeup look simple, nothing over the top. However, everyone says it's better to have it done because it's less stress. So I'm still debating. I can't do hair so definitely having that done.

I just want to relax and let someone else do it. Plus I can't do my own hair to save my life unless I want it straight down, ponytailed, or a tight bun. None of which I want for my wedding.

So, to make a long story short, my husband and I had two weddings. A small wedding with just our immediate families of origin, and then the larger one with our extended families and friends. An emergency necessitated the smaller wedding (ill family member).

Anyway, since the smaller wedding was an emergency, I had to put it together in like a week. No time to hire hair and makeup professionals. I did that myself. I am somewhat skilled with makeup, and I was fine with how it turned out. Plus, there were no close up photos of my face that day! So that was fine. Maybe I'd feel differently if there were some super duper close pictures.

For hair, I just did simple loose curls. But in some of my photos, I can see where I missed a spot, and it drives me nuts.

For the large wedding, I had professional hair and makeup. No regrets there.

I'm pretty set on doing my own makeup, I do a good job on my own and I can make my makeup heavy enough for photos. I've had professional photos done and I've worked for a TV station before so I know how to achieve a full face of makeup that looks good on camera.

Hair, I'm hiring someone. I'm doing a makeup trial and if I don't like it I'll be doing my own makeup.

I did my own hair, because I wanted to put it in a bun, and couldn't see paying someone so much money to do something I do once a week. My veil was an issue tho, so I had to curl my hair and leave it down for the ceremony. I'm not upset with how anything turned out, no one really saw my hair under the veil to know a professional didn't do it, and it was much easier to brush out and put up. I did a few trials to make sure I wouldn't have any issues the day of. I paid for airbrush make up and loved how it came out, I wanted to make sure it looked good in photos.

I'm doing my own make up. I've always loved doing make up and have gotten it professionally done a handful of times and have hated it every single time. I know how I like my make up

I will have someone do my hair, because I definitely can't do what I want. As for makeup, pretty sure I'm gonna do that myself. I don't wear much makeup regularly and every trial I've done is just not me (FH says so too). As for everyone saying the pictures won't turn out well, I am waiting to see how my engagement photos look. I should be getting them soon (excited)! I say, if you are comfortable with your abilities, go for it!

I did my own hair and makeup and prefer that to having professionals. I've had makeup done professionally a few times and I never liked it. Hair I was only willing to do because I didn't go for an updo. I kept my hair long, added some clip in extensions to get that bigger, flowy look.

If you're unsure, consider doing your own makeup and hair for the engagement or pre-wedding shoot if you're having one to see how it'll turn out in photos.

I'm having my sister do my hair and makeup because she's rather good at both and I don't think I'll have a problem with it. She's done my hair and makeup for several occasions before so I'm confident that it will be ok, plus they're not real high on my priority list honestly. I never wear makeup or do my hair so whatever it looks like will be better than how people normally see me anyway. lol

I am doing professional make-up. I was going to have my hair professionally styled as well until I did it myself for my bridal portraits and impressed myself! After that I decided I'd save that money and do it myself.

I think it all depends on how confident you are in your ability to do your own make up or hair. I want to get my hair done because it looks so much better than anything I could ever do. I am going to ask a friend who is a professional actress to do my makeup. I want to feel special that day, and do something different, so I will definitely get my hair done. When I do it, it always looks like a mess. Its always about what you want, and what you decide to care about and focus on. Congrats!

I was happy to have a HMUA do all of mine, it's the only time I've ever had my makeup done and I wish I could have someone do my makeup every day! I probably could have done my own hair but I wasn't confident I could get curls to stay for 10+ hours. It was nice to not be at all stressed about it since I hired someone.

I definitely wanted someone to do my hair. my hair is really dense but the hairs themselves are thin and unruly, and doesnt cooperate with me, but i know will perform great for her and will look flawless for our wedding if i have my stylist Kayla do it. I have a friend (who is also in the WP) who is an aspiring makeup artist and he has offered to help me do my makeup myself. I have very sensitive skin and still have acne issues despite a very strict and gentle skincare routine, and therefore, trust issues with products i don't know of and people putting them on my face. I want to avoid breakouts or rashes, so i figure the best way to ensure that would be to have my friend help me pick out products, test and try them myself and formulate my makeup look alone. it gives me rest to know that i have control over this. if you dont struggle with this kind of skin issue though, i could definitely see how hiring someone could relieve a huge weight off your shoulders for your wedding look.

@ogest gretchen, I got my makeup and hair done for a high school dance (this was probably 17 years ago). While trying on wedding dresses, I asked my mom if she remembered that time I got my makeup and hair done and she knew exactly what I was talking about. Don't know that I could ever do that again. Both hair and makeup I could've done better myself. Glad I'm not the only one. Smiley smile
