My FH and I have a shared bank account. We move frequently so we have an online bank account. Anyway, we received our first wedding gift checks in the mail made out to 'Mr & Mrs. hislastname'. I tried to deposit them and found out I could not since one of the names on the check does not match the name on the bank account. I called and they said I'll have to send in a copy of my new drivers license after I change my name before they can accept checks with a different last name. I haven't even decided if I am changing my last name - which would mean I could never deposit those checks (at least not to our shared account - we are going to look into other bank accounts). I'm not even sure if I am going to change my name! I figure it is pretty standard to deposit checks right away, but even for women changing their name they probably don't have all the paper work ready immediately. Has anyone else had this sort of problem?

I kept my last name and we currently have seperate accounts. We haven't had any problems at his bank or credit union (we're still getting checks 5 months later). I just show my ID and sign with his last name.

My bank was a problem, I guess because my name wasn't technically on the check. They said I would need to bring in our marriage license.

I actually just did this today. Lol. Have been waiting and gotten like 5 calls about checks not being cashed... Yep you gotta wait.

I play to sign mine with my first name maiden name and new name

the new name is his last name on our joint account...and my maiden name is also on the joint account...think it should be obvious what happened. I doubt we'll have problems, but just in case, I'll save the checks (we'll deposit from phone).

I just called my bank (Wells Fargo) for another issue. It turns out the teller who said I could bring in my marriage license was wrong. Apparently, any checks not made out to my legal name cannot be deposited, even if I present my marriage license. I understand, but that kind of sucks.

I didn't change my name on FB after updating my status to "married." We were never referred to as "Mr. and Mrs." at our wedding. We use a return address sticker with both of our full names listed. Our immediate families and friends know I didn't change my name. How much clearer can I get, lol!

I guess we'll be saying we're newly married at his bank(s) for a long time!

I would be complaining to the upper management and go from there. Worse case scenario I would contact who sent the checks and let the know the cannot be cashed and why.

Just have him deposit. My bank didn't give me any trouble even though I didn't change my name. Could you call them and have them write you a new check?

Ps- didn't read all the comments.

That seems strange to me, as long ad the check is endorsed by both of you there shouldn't be an issue depositing it. FH deposited checks into his account written from a third party and addressed solely to ME before I was ever on his account. I just signed it and gave it to him and he had no trouble. I'm not really sure how to handle it unless you have any accounts at another bank? Or did you only talk to one teller? I would go back in and talk to someone else, sometimes people have a tendancy to be a sticker and other aren't so much...
