Any Luck with Passports?

Jennifer, on June 16, 2020 at 1:26 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 13

Good afternoon everyone,

Awhile back, I read a discussion on someone trying to get a passport renewed during the COVID-19 crisis. I was wanting to know how that turned out or if you are still waiting. If anyone has a story to share I would be glad to hear it.

My back story to this passport mess is that me and my fiance were originally scheduled to go on a cruise for our honeymoon. Well the further into the COVID-19 situation, I knew the cruise was going to be cancelled, it was just the when at that point. So we started to plan for other options. Of course we were thinking about Sandals or even a all inclusive resort in Mexico and all that. Well one day it hit me after working that "I DON'T HAVE MY FREAKING PASSPORT". Well, I have one, but it expired last year right after we got engaged, so I didn't see the end to renew it with my soon to be name change and a honeymoon where it wasn't needed. Obviously now I regret that decision. So I sent my passport for renewal towards the end of April to see if my the grace of God it comes in before I made official new plans. They cashed my check ASAP and haven't heard or seen anything yet. I was checking the status section online and for the longest it said not found and maybe two weeks ago it updated to in progress. I was hoping that was positive news, but still not sure how to feel about it. I have made myself a deadline to receive it prior to making new honeymoon arraignments, which is now 11 days away. I am thinking maybe to push it a little longer in hopes, but don't want to wait too late! Any suggestions or stories on your passport story?!?!?!

Hope everyone is well and wishing my July Brides lots of love and I hope your wedding is happening! Smiley heart

My guess is that the 2 weeks is the valid acceptance date. You may need to wait another 4 weeks to receive your passport. Usually takes up to 6 weeks to process and return passports, this also depends on where you live.

After reading your post, I went to check my own passport. Expired a month ago!! Damnit! So now I am just as nervous as you are. Luckily we don't have plans to go out of the country this year, but we had planned to for our honeymoon next spring. I guess I better get on this NOW! Good luck! I hope it works out for you!

My passport fortunately won't expire until after I've changed my name, but my fiancé is probably not going to his friend's bachelor party in Canada because of this situation. I checked the website recently and it said that they'll be processing them in the order the applications they were received, but as another poster mentioned, that won't be until phase two. Even after they start processing them, it will take longer than usual because the offices won't be fully staffed right away. They are able to process payments right away, but they can't process passports because security issues make it impossible to do that remotely. Would you consider booking a domestic trip for 2020 and then going somewhere else next year?

Yeah, we are considering all options! Just a disappointment, but that seems to be the over all theme of this year! Like I said in my original post, I have a date set to make definite plans, but for now we wait. Thank you all for the advice and telling your story!

Crazy how we don't think about it if we don't need it. Then BAM this crazy twist of events just gets everything out of wack and you then have to think about all these things! I would apply ASAP, just so they have it and by the time you need it you will be set to go! Good luck!

Just wanted to give you an update. I received my new passport in the mail today, less than a month turnaround! I was able to renew by mail, so definitely easier than trying to obtain a new passport. But the passport agencies are clearly working somewhat up to speed again so I wanted to give y'all some hope!

Wow, I am happy for you! I renewed mine by mail in April and still have yet to see it come back! Crazy, we ended up going to St. Croix VI and it was a pretty nice trip! Crazy how everything played out despite COVID-19
