Any Greece honeymooners out there

christine, on January 30, 2018 at 7:55 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 10

My daughter and future son in law are in the process of planning their honeymoon to Greece in Sept. 2018. They plan to spend 10-14 days there with a budget of about 10,000. Neither have ever been there before. She's asked me to do a little research for her before they meet with travel agent this week. I've always read such wonderful suggestions on this site, so I thought if anyone would like to share their experiences and have any must see's and tips to travel there I can pass them along to her, this would be great help! thanks Smiley smile

Well, I may be the right resource for you as I am Greek and have traveled to Greece every summer for the past 20 years.

To begin, I think 10 to 14 days is the perfect amount. They'll get a great taste of Greece, from the mainland to the islands. 10,000 dollars (mind you, you need to convert to Euros so that'll equal roughly 7,500 to 8,000 Euros), is a good amount.

    I suggest the following things:

    - Spend one to two days in Athens, but nothing more than that. Soak in the history, ancient ruins, and streets rich with culture. You'll want to visit the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, and Monastiraki Square and Ermou for shopping and restaurants. Keep in mind that pretty much everyone knows English, so you will have no problem communicating with locals. They are also extremely friendly and hospitable. However, please keep an eye out for tourist traps. They aren't common, but you don't want to get caught up in some street vendor who persuades you to buy random things you don't need at high prices. Just be friendly and feel free to use common terms and phrases such as "Kalimera" (Good Morning), "Yia Sas" (Hello), and Efharisto (Thank You).

    - You can travel via taxi, bus, Uber, or car rental. Again, do your research to make sure you aren't overpaying for anything.

    - Next, you'll want to visit at least two islands. I wouldn't spend more than 3 to 4 days on each island, as it can be easy to get burnt out. You want to see different, interesting landmarks and each island offers something totally different. There may be over hundreds of islands to chose from, but you won't be disappointed with anything you decide. My personal favorite is Zakynthos, in the Ionian Sea. It's absolutely stunning. The Aegean side is drier, whereas the Ionian side is greener. Other islands I suggest: Santorini (for a romantic destination), Mykonos (for more of a cosmopolitan, and upbeat island), and others like Skiathos, Corfu, Lefkada, Paros, Naxos, Rhodes, or Crete.

    - In order to travel to the islands from Athens, you can either fly there from the Athens International Airport (Eleutherios Venizelos), or take a ship from Piraeus Port in Piraeus. Taking a ship will be much cheaper but it'll also take longer.

    - Make sure to take advantage of the variety of beaches, wonderful cuisine, and boutique shopping. Your daughter and future son-in-law will have a wonderful time!!! It's absolutely stunning!

    I second everything Pegs said.

Im also Greek and will be having my honeymoon there. We’re going to Athens, Santorini, and Naxos, each for 3 days. We worked with our travel agent to get the transportation between each location ahead of time. I would strongly recommend doing so because taxi drivers may try to take you the scenic routes just to hike up costs. Driving in Athens is very dangerous so I would avoid renting a car unless you’re used to driving on the opposite side.

Hi guys.... have a question for you both. The travel agent said the cost for transportation ( a taxi) from the airport in Crete to the Elounda would cost 180.00 us dollars per person round trip ??? does this sound reasonable ???
