Another Videography Question! How Many Hours?

Lisa, on January 28, 2021 at 8:27 AM Posted in Planning 1 28
Thank you to all who helped me out on my last videographer post! I was able to find a couple options who offer full length videos in addition to shorter highlight films. We narrowed it down to two options, and we're trying to decide on which one to book. One option offers up to 4 hours in their packages (though additional hours can be added at a cost, which could change the cost significantly). The other one offers various packages of 6-12 hours.

My question is, how many hours would be sufficient for the videographer? 4 hours seems low, but I guess I don't know what a typical amount is. We are doing a first look about 2 hours before the ceremony, a short 15-20 minute ceremony, cocktail hour, and then the reception. I don't think they'd need to be there for the full reception - we aren't doing a grand exit or anything that they'd need to capture at the end, but I don't know how long into the reception I should book them for, since I would like some video of everyone dancing, etc. How many hours did you book your videographer for? Did they capture everything you wanted them to? How many hours would be sufficient?

We chose how many hours for photography and videography by making a list of all the events we wanted them to capture, then mapping out approximately what time those events would happen that evening. Originally we chose a 6 hour package for videography. But, after thinking about it, I ended up contacting the videographer and adding an additional 2 hours. I just didn’t want to feel rushed or miss anything. I know everyone says the day goes by so quickly and things always go wrong, so I wanted to have an hour buffer before and after just in case of any hiccups.

We chose a 6 hour package for ours! We think that's more than enough time to get some getting ready footage, first look reactions, ceremony, and dances!

Daughter had her videographers there for 7 hours. That covered from first look at 1 pm through cake cutting at 7:30; then they left at 8 pm, so they only missed the last two hours of dancing. They got enough dancing before they left that there are some great clips in their video. Her photographers covered 11 am - 10:00 pm, so all the getting ready activities were only covered in still photos, but she didn't have any need for video of that. She was very happy with the combination of still and video coverage that they had.

The extra hour buffer before and after is a great idea! You bring up a really good point about things potentially feeling rushed due to time, I hadn't really thought of it that way. We made sure to book our photographer for like 10 hours to make sure we had plenty of time for photos, but we also have a few evening photos we want to take (have to wait for it to be dark enough outside to take them), so I don't think the videographer needs to be there that late. After mapping out my timeline (still super tentative right now), I think 6-8 hours would probably be what I should book for (probably 8, after reading your comment). Thank you for your help!

I hired my photographer and videographer for 10 hours and assistant photographer and videographer for 6 hours on the wedding day, but I want everything covered from start to finish! I also have 2 different locations for my ceremony and reception, and I want all the details/decorations coverage as well.

If ceremony and reception is all at the same place 8 hours should be enough for full coverage. Since you don't need the full coverage I think 6 might be enough.

    How long is your reception?

I think 6-8 hours makes sense, depending on the timeline! How much of the open dancing/socializing/etc do you think would be enough to capture? I'm now currently leaning towards booking for 8 hours, which would capture around 2 hours of open dancing (in addition to ceremony, first look, cake cutting, etc). Do you think that's enough footage of dancing? Or too much (if there is such a thing)?

I think 2 hours is plenty to get some good coverage of dancing! Most of the weddings I've attended, I noticed the videographer there for 1-2 hours when we started dancing. 2 hours is good because usually it's a slow start to get people on the dance floor. I think two hours will have enough time for people to start feeling the music and have a nice crowd form for video coverage!

We have ours booked for 10 hours. We’re doing a first look, having them capture us getting ready, ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. I’d rather have more cushion and not have to worry about adding extra time day of. Our videographer is also going to have an assistant and we went with one photographer (who was a preferred vendor at our venue and trust that he’ll be good on his own).

That seems like a great timeline! My photographer will also be there for around 10 hours, but I don't think I need the videographer there for that long (at least, with the cost of extra hours, I don't want to pay for that many extra hours). I'm currently thinking somewhere between 6-8 hours. From what you said, it sounds like the videographers at your daughter's wedding captured around a half hour of open dancing/socializing/etc. Was that enough time for them to get good footage? I'm unsure of how much time to have them at the reception for to capture the open dancing/socializing/lawn games/smores bar/etc footage.

You bet! :-) I am always of the mind better safe than sorry; especially with a once-in-a-lifetime event!

It was probably even more. I think the open dancing probably started around 6:45???? I'm a little fuzzy, but the bridal party was announced into the reception at 5:15, and the plated dinner was served at 5:30. After they ate, the B&G did table visits and photos with each table, toward the end of dinner. The father-daughter and mother-son dances were immediately after dinner (~6:40ish?), then the dance floor opened. I think the bouquet toss and cake cutting were around 7:30. Daughter's video package included all raw footage -- 6+ hours from both cameras -- and a 7 minute highlight film. As I remember, in the raw footage, there is tons of video during dancing, and probably about a third of the highlight reel features cuts from the highlight dances and then plenty of open dancing. There is a nice mix of slow, romantic cuts of the B&G dancing, and fun party dancing with a variety of guests -- it seemed like plenty to me, and I know daughter & SIL were really happy with the finished products. I'd work with your coordinator/venue/photographer/DJ/etc. to make sure your timeline is as tight and accurate as possible, then book your videographer to cover the key events. If you're working with experienced vendors, they should be able to give you good advice on timing. Good luck! Smiley heart

We had our videographers for about 6 hours and it was enough time. I think 4 is a little short. With only 4 hours, it will be hard to get footage from getting ready, first look (if you choose to do one), ceremony, cocktail hour/newlywed photos, and reception. Doing 6 hours gave us plenty of time for them to capture the important parts of our day.

Awesome that you have both the photographer and videographer for that long! I agree, I also want as many details as possible captured from my wedding. My ceremony and reception will be at the same venue, so no travel time in between. First look around 2. Ceremony at 4:15 or 4:30. Cocktail hour will start at 5 or 515, and the reception will start an hour later. I think we have to end by midnight. From the previous comments, it sounds like somewhere between 6-8 hours would be sufficient, though I'm still not sure exactly how many. I'm leaning towards booking the longer timing, just because I'd rather have as much as possible captured, rather than them potentially missing out on a few details because they left a little early.

I think that makes sense! I agree, it usually takes people a little bit to get out on the dance floor, so having the videographer there a little longer might be the better option. Thank you for your help!

We had 4 hours of videography and it was definitely adequate!

Oh wow, 10 hours is awesome!! I agree that having the extra time built in removes a lot of stress and feeling that things have to be rushed. Very cool that you'd get an assistant videographer too! Both of the videographer options my fiance and I are looking at would provide two videographers, which I think will help.

Def and if you do less hours it’ll be good to have flexibility like one videographer grabbing shots of groom getting ready and other grabbing shots of you getting ready.

I think depending on your timeline you may be able to do 6, but to be on the safe side 8 would probably be more ideal to capture all the details! If it included a second shooter you could probably get away with 6 hours though.

Oh OK, I see! For some reason I had incorrectly interpreted the 7:30 timing in your first message as the time that open dancing started. That makes sense that they were able to capture a lot more dancing footage from the reception! Glad to hear that it turned out so well for them! I will talk with my photographer on timing, and will go from there. My guess is I'll probably book the videographer for somewhere around 7-8 hours. Thank you so much for your help! ❤️
