American food or Mexican food

Monica, on June 25, 2019 at 1:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
So I am half black & half indian and FH is mexican. I am debating on which kind of food we should have. Traditional mexican weddings usually have a dish called Birria (steak in a red sauce, some ppl consider it a stew) with rice and beans. FH Really wants birria but I dont want my side of the family to be picky, I figured chicken & sides would be the most neutral way to go. But FH will have a lot more family there than me.

Do we
1. Go with all Mexican food & let the picky ppl fill up on the beans and rice & other sides
2. Go with American food
3. Try to have both.

If we tried both I thought maybe on the RSVP we could have an option for people to select which meal they want. But the only thing is we are having a self serve buffet. How do we regulate that ppl are serving the meal they selected on the rsvp to ensure we ordered enough food for both meals. . . Sounds too complicated Smiley sad

Any Suggestions?

You can't ask guests to select a meal for a buffet, especially self serve. As you said, there is no way to police it. Pre-counts only work for plated meals. If you do a buffet, you need to make enough of each dish that everyone can take some of everything. Also, if you do self-serve, you need even more because people will always take a ton of food and eat half. You usually want 2 or 3 entrre options, so you can always do 1 Mexican and 1 American or 2 and 1.

I would offer one mexican entree and one american entree on the buffet. You cannot ask guests to choose one in advance for a buffet and would just need to have your caterer prepare enough of both for each guest.

It sounds like if it's buffet then it shouldn't be too hard to have both

Since are doing a buffet style I say include both! People will have the option to pick what they want. You can have a mix of Mexican and American dishes. Even if your FH has more family coming than you do, i think everyone will be happy with a good mix of everything. Birria is great! But not everyone likes goat so including an American entree choice can be good for those who don't Smiley smile

I would do stations with a caterer, so you can have multiple options. Typically those caterers plan enough for each guest to take some of each. Or I'd do the unique food like Mexican/Indian for appetizers and dessert and do American food for dinner.

My FH is Puerto rican, and i am as white as the newly fallen snow. so what we decided to so was have our food at cocktail hour be Spanish, and our dinner options with be chicken and beef, the basic wedding dinner food. in trying to make both sides happy we are having our rehearsal dinner at a Latin restaurant, so we'll have a full Spanish meal the day before.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I needed to get my thoughts together before I talk to the caterer so I have an idea of what we want. MIL didn’t like the idea of having separate dinner options (one or the other) but I think everyone is right, maybe mexican food with a separate option of chicken breast maybe?
