Amazon group gifting misunderstanding- i am so, so screwed

Amy, on December 31, 2018 at 4:55 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

I checked apply group gifting to all gifts over 10 dollars on my registry. I thought it would be a nice option- and that it was just that- an option. But somehow everyone who meant to outright buy a gift individually, funded it fully as a group gift instead. I didn't read every single FAQ for the Amazon registry... but this means that we, the recipients, are responsible for any taxes and fees for the gift. I just get the cost of the gift on a gift card when it's fully funded and have to put it in my cart and buy it like normal!!

This is partially my oversight but also I don't understand why all these instances of a single person trying to buy a single gift ALL went through the group funding. There's no way I can eat the cost of taxes and fees for all these gifts, and NO way I can go back to my guests and ask them to pay more towards their gifts.

My FH just found out his dad is in ICU and on a ventilator so he is absolutely not going to know because he's already stressed and that's 100000% more important. How on Earth do I fix this? Everyone's wondering if I received the gifts, thinking they just shipped them all to my house directly.

Have you contacted Amazon about this? They have fantastic customer service. But I'm not sure how it works with their registry stuff.

I was going to but it's clearly spelled out in the wedding resgistry FAQs. I think I could still because clearly my guests misunderstood what they were trying to do so it's not clear enough to users... but I'm so stressed over the more serious issue of FH's family member that I think I'll have to just eat the cost (comes to about 100 dollars).

Do you have to buy those gifts or can you keep the credit for a later use?

I would reach out to Amazon all the same, explain the misunderstanding and ask if there is anything they can do. Yes, they may just point you back to the FAQs but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I think it doesn’t hurt to ask amazon but maybe you have to get roughly $100 less of gifts?

im really sorry that this happened and hope amazon steps in to help

I did a few Amazon group gifts and you don’t have to ultimately buy the gifts. You could just leave the money in your Amazon account and spend it in the future as you wish. You could also buy all the gifts but one (and use the money from that one to pay to tax).

Thank you for posting this! I wasn't aware that's how it worked. We are only doing it for gifts over $200. I would just tell them yes and buy what you can with the gift card.
