Am I the only one not excited about the marriage license?

Shannon A, on March 4, 2014 at 12:37 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 14

I see all these posts about the marriage license. I remember my sil cried when they got hers. Maybe it is because my situation is so disjointed that I don't feel that way? FH and I went and signed the paperwork in January because he won't be in my state between then and the wedding. I will be going to pick it up at the end of the month with SIL. I'm just not that excited about it. It's just another thing off the list to me. We aren't married as soon as I pick it up. Am I weird for not feeling excited about it? Anyone else feel that way?

I see it as just one more item on the "to do" list. It's just another thing that has to be done.

It's as exciting to me as buying shoes or sending out invites. It's just a step, that's all.

It's kinda cool to go in with your FH and both get the paper. That's all, I think.

That was the moment that it all became "real" for DH & me! "Oh, this is really going to happen!"

I wasn't expecting to get excited, but I did. Did you feel excited about other things you checked off your "to do" list? Like picking a dress, venue, invites, etc. Because the marriage license is an important part, you can't really be married without it.

I get excited about things like dress and shoes. They are things you dream about. But the marriage license seems like more of an obligation. I get the relief of having it done. I don't feel the excited part :/

I'm excited about it because it's one step closer to my dreams. I'm afraid that it might be a little anti-climatic though lol

Not really excited about the marriage license itself but the fact that it's another thing we don't have to worry about anymore

I see it as a bit of an annoyance. FH and I will have to take a half day at work to drive down to the county where our wedding will be.

It was surreal for me. We went with our witness, who is now my bonus daughter. She is 18yrs old and our 2 younger kids were with us. Well, after we signed everything, the clerk asked everyone to stand up a take the "oath". It was great to share this with our children. We all went to lunch afterwards to celebrate.

I'm excited about it, even though it won't be for a long time. First of all, I get excited about tons of little wedding things, especially ones that make the wedding feel more real to me. Second of all, the license is what actually will make us married. So to me, it's the most exciting part.

Maybe that is part of it for me. To me, the sacrament is what actually makes us married, not the paper. But even legally, you don't sign it until the wedding day or the rehearsal where I'm from, so it's still just paper when you pick it up

Honestly I was never excited about getting the license. My husband and I have considered ourselves married for 10 years (technically common law marriage). We only got the license so now everyone else can see us the way we have always seen each other. Legal marriage is only a piece of paper it only matters to everyone else. What is important is our commitment to each other legally married or not.
