Am i over reacting to my family?

Drew, on October 3, 2019 at 7:23 AM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 10
I’m an only child, and I moved 18 hours away from home for college. I still live 18 hours away with my fiancé, and my parents have since also left home. Fiancé and I keep our parents in the loop since they are helping pay for everything and we want their opinion, but my grandmother and aunt have gone a little... overboard? Grandma demands I keep aunt in the loop and aunt demands I keep grandma in the loop. I have been occasionally giving them some details (location, color scheme, etc), but they just keep asking for more as if they want to be in on everything. My aunt has one child (significantly older than I am) who has cut off all contact with my entire family, and my grandmother claimed in our last phone call that I should try to make up for it by keeping them involved in the wedding planning. To me, this seems crazy. I don’t mind sometimes chatting with them about it, but I don’t want a thousand people in on all the details of the wedding. Am I overreacting?

I dont think you're over reacting. If they see you and ask how plans are going, you can update them, but having to give them updates all the time can just get annoying. Or they can go ahead and ask your parents how it's going. I dont update anyone unless they ask, but we are also paying for the whole wedding ourselves.

I don’t think you’re overreacting. I can see where your gram & aunt are coming from- they’re probably just SO excited for your big day. But it’s up to you who you choose to involve in planning. And arguably, you are involving them.
The more people, the more opinions, the more you’ll feel like you need to satisfy everyone. If you don’t want them to be involved that much, then don’t. Extra opinions are just stressful and not always helpful, take it from me lol

You're definitely not overreacting. I would politely ask them to ease up, as you'd like to keep the details between the two of you and both of your parents.

Nah. Family gets annoying when it comes to planning weddings. My grandma kept scoffing at such silly little things like the fact that we were assigning tables for the reception.
She's also just kind of an opinionated nut sometimes. But honestly there were days where I just wanted to bluntly put it "Are you paying for a cent of this wedding? No? Okay shut up."
Family isnt entitled to know every little detail. And I would say if they keep it up just tell them you want them to be surprised with the details!

I don't think you're overreacting at all. It is not your responsibility to make up for another family member's absence. You are not obligated to tell anyone every detail either. What I might suggest is telling them that you want the finer details to be more of a surprise so they can take it all in and enjoy it on the big day.

My FH's family is similar. They want ALL the details of our wedding and then never shared any details of his cousins wedding when I would ask.. it's interesting how people work. I vaguely give details.. show them a picture of something I purchased, etc.. but if it's something I don't care to have them know then I say we haven't decided yet and just listen to how I need to decide soon because the wedding is quickly approaching! I recently decided to forgo my dress and buy a new one, and I have yet to tell anyone on my FH's side. I figured I would once the dress arrives (3 weeks before the wedding), but I just dont want to deal with them yet.

I also don't think you're over reacting. Not everyone needs to be in on every detail

You're not overreacting at all! It's nice that they want to know the details and be "in the loop" but that doesn't mean you have to tell them everything. Updates are fine, but remember, the more people you tell the details to, the more opinions you have to deal with. Also, I don't think it's right that the family is sort of expecting you to be your aunt's surrogate daughter--in the sense that hers is estranged from the family, and grandma expects you to pick up the slack. That's just not right. It's not your fault your cousin cut herself off from the family. Just ignore that. Do what is best for you and FH and your wedding.

When you talk to aunt or grandma, just listen to them, and if you are pressed for an opinion on their ideas, be like "that's a great idea, I'll consider that" or "we haven't decided which way we're going on that yet" and other non-committal phrases you can use to keep the conversation moving, but not offend anyone. You can make them think they are in on all the intimate details without actually including them in all the intimate details.

You're not overreacting! I get that they are excited and want to be involved, but I wouldn't involve them too much. What you were doing before was fine. If you involve them too much you will lose control of your wedding really quickly, or feel pressure to do things you don't want to do! Good luck! Smiley smile

You don’t owe anyone notes on what you’re doing or why you’re doing it. If they aren’t contributing financially, they should be treated like any other guest. Have your mom step in to assist and talk some sense into them. You have enough on your mind. Don’t let anyone bully you including your grandmother lol
