Am I obligated to pay for hotel rooms for immediate family?

Betty, on June 2, 2009 at 3:11 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

I am planning a destination wedding in Hawaii. Now my sisters tell me that if we want everyone to go, I need to reserve the rooms at the hotel and pay for each room. I don't mind paying for my parents and his parents but do we really have to? Where does it end, do I have to pay for all immediate family? Sisters and brothers?

You do not need to pay for anyone besides yourselvs... it sounds like your sisters are trying to get a free stay from you. whats next them asking you to pay for their flights too... we are having a destination wedding to Las Vegas and we are not paying for anyone for anything.

Generally couple's do only pay for themselves...we got married in Negril and even my Grandmother paid for her own room, flights and food.

It's wonderful gesture for you to pay for the parents rooms! And sup a room block with a couple of Hotels in the area so that everyone who want to attend can get a lower rate is one thing but beyond that anyone asking you to pay probably feels inconvenienced and is just looking for a free room to cut their own expenses.

But I agree, if you do agree to pay for their hotel rooms it's not going to end there...it's likely they will come back and expect you to pay for other things (flights, rental cars, activities, etc.) Hold your ground, if she really wants to be there she will otherwise you can send her some pictures.

    Best of Luck!

I am also having a destination wedding. It is not customary, nor do I feel obligated, to pay for anything for anyone. However, my FH and I are paying for grandmother (flight & hotel) because we are both close to her and she is the only grandparent between the two of us. We are also planning to block rooms and workout a deal with Airtran for discounted group rates for everyone to take advantage of. We may pay for some additional things for certain people, but it's dependent upon our budget and I don't feel it's necessary if we can't afford it.

Ok Betty, I'm in the same boat on this. We are planning to marry in Honduras where my FH is from. We found a very beautiful resort where we were interested in having our wedding in Roatan at the Barefoot Cay Resort. But in order to have the wedding there the resort requires at least a 3 night stay. My FH and I are covered because this is where we also plan to honeymoon but I was wondering the same thing as you are. I have not announced our wedding yet and was trying to plan things before I do but I am afraid if my family will even travel the distance considering these expenses. And I know my family will probably say the same thing as your sisters. The plan was to have a destination wedding then have a reception back in Illinois where my family resides but at this point I don't know if I care to spend the money to have a reception there anymore and just have what we want in Honduras and call it a wrap considering my FH and I are the ones footing the bill.

I would recommend get a block rooms at the hotel for dicounted rate and pass on the discount to the family/friends.

Call the hotel with your date and let them know how many rooms you will need to block off and they will give you a discount for your guests this is no cost to you.

    Good luck.

Coupon 10% off from me to you.
