Am i being too picky about my alterations?

Gaby, on March 4, 2021 at 10:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 17
I asked my seamstress to add bra pads to my dress which she also made strapless. When I came into my last fitting, I didn’t love how they looked. They add padding, but no support if that makes sense. I was hoping that I would get a little lift and cleavage, but I look like I’m not really wearing anything yet, I feel they make me look fat. When I told the seamstress this, she suggested I wear a bra, but the whole point was so that I didn’t have to wear one. I didn’t bring it up because I really like her and I had asked her to add the boning she removed because the dress looked a little bit baggy under the breasts. The dress already had a lot of structure and it’s own bra pads, which is why I choose it. What should I do? My wedding is in 15 days and I’m supposed to pick up my dress on Saturday. Am I just being too picky? Should I ask her to remove them or just keep them in? I’ll post a picture soon!

Pads sewn into a dress are never going to give you the same support as a bra. If you’re looking for a lift, you’re going to need something else.

I agree with PP. What if you looked into tape or some sort of sticky boobs? Or if you liked the look before, have her remove the new pads. If the dress already had bra pads, were they swapped out or do you have to sets of pads? That could be the reason for it not fitting right.

I recommend you try breasts tape for support

I would take a stateless &/or backless bra with you to your next appointment. The cups aren’t going to give you the support you’re looking for.

Yes! It has two sets of bra pads which make it look super cushiony in the boobs.

I don't think you are being picky at all. I believe she must have added the pads in an off position and not tightened the fabric around it enough. It is suppose to fit very snugged to the dress so once you put it on it is a like a built in bra and you have that perfect lift. If anything definitely agree that you should try some taping and cross fingers that they hold through the day and have back up just in case. Has the boning structure you requested helped?

Okay, I thought I was going crazy... I keep seeing all these other strapless dresses that are nice and fitted, but mine just looks... frumpy I guess. But, I’m hoping the boning helps, I will find out tomorrow when I pick it up. I’m nervous, especially since my wedding is so close. 😞

I should clarify that the dress already had a “bra” built in. The whole point of adding the pads was to give me that lift. Not that I have saggy breasts le anything, I just want some more hold and lift.

My seamstress placed the cups just off to the side a bit and that is how we created a subtle lift and cleavage. My dress also had boning, but no built in pads.

I don't think you are being picky. You want to have support however sewing in a bra never gives the same look as actual bra. I agree with everyone else that you might want to look into other options like tape or I've seen these sticky bra thing not sure what the are called but this is what they look like

Without knowing the structure of your dress it's difficult to say whether pads could help provide lift and support, but in general you'd need straps to lift your girls up or a style that is tight around the front and back to push them together. The cups are only going to "push" if there is some structure there to fight gravity.

If your dress is a strapless style with a high back and a heavily structured fabric, you can lift your boobs by making the bust line tighter, essentially eliminating space for your breast tissue to settle in and forcing the breast tissue upward, and then padding can help fill out the underside of the breast to make it appear full. Padding is always going to add volume, so if you are used to the proportion of your breasts as they naturally are, adding pads will likely make you look a bit thicker/curvier, which may or may not be to your liking. If what you want is just lift and cleavage but not additional volume, you need to have the bust line taken in (assuming the dress style is one where the top line of the dress in the back is similar to the position of your breasts, or in the same place that a strapless bra would be). However this cannot be done with delicate fabrics, so if your bodice is made of illusion lace or something similar, it will be difficult to achieve the "fighting gravity" effect. If you have smaller breasts and want a little volume, pads can be added, but you'll still need to make sure the bust line is appropriately snug in order to push your breast tissue up and create cleavage. If you have very little breast tissue to begin with it will be difficult to get much cleavage at all.

Daaaang! That was amazing insight!! Thank you! Yeah, it had little spaghetti straps that we’re removed so the back is not very supportive at all. This helps me set my expectations a lot!! Thank you!
