I want to post this on the forums because I want to make sure I'm not overreacting or being rude.

So we need servers for our lemonade bar and food, and a "friend" who is helping me plan said that she could find us some help if we just told her how much we will pay. For context, she plans tons of events for schools and her church and is very good at it but she is much better off than we are so a lot of times her view of a budget is ridiculously expensive for us. We aren't able to afford a professional server and we are self-catering and because we are doing it buffet style where everything is single serve, we need a server according to new COVID rules from our venue. We are able to pay $8 an hour (since we need two servers that will be $16 an hour out of pocket for us) and will feed them of course.

Anyways, apparently she feels that the amount we are able to pay will get us "a 14 or 15 year old who may not know how to serve properly...if you are really serious about being safe you need to pay at LEAST $10-$12." First of all, I've been working in food service since I was 16 so I don't understand why that age is a reason to not hire someone to put ice in cups and hand people a skewer. Secondly we accepted this "friends" help to save money on a wedding planner since we are on a tight budget and since she has stepped in we have had to shell out hundreds of dollars in florals and decor and changed my vision because she "knows how to do these things." I mentioned this to my mom and she said that we should just have my aunts, uncle and cousin do it since "families are supposed to help with the wedding...parents and siblings no, but aunts and uncles and cousins should help, plus your aunt can't sit still anyways." I'm sorry but I am under the impression that asking family to help at your wedding, that they spend money to travel to, is EXTREMELY rude, no matter how they are related. If they were in the wedding industry and I hired them, that's a totally different story, but not just because they'll be there, and especially not if my mom isn't willing to help with anything.

Am I being a jerk for not asking my family to serve at our wedding? Should I pay more, or is that reasonable? We don't need a professional, but I don't want to be a cheapskate and our budget can't handle much more of these unexpected costs.

You seem offended, but there's no need to be. I meant that my response to you wasn't really related because this subject is completely irrelevant to Annika's post. It was not an insult. I only even replied to your comment because it was typed as a response to mine.

It didn't seem necessary to start my comment with, "in the US..." because most people on here are from the US and people who live in other countries generally include their home countries in the question when they're asking about things that are location-dependent. Annika used $ without clarifying that she meant something other than USD.
Every country has their own labor laws and covid restrictions, and no one should assume that the rules where they are apply everywhere else on the planet, and I wasnr

*that sent before I was ready and it was also supposed to be in response to someone who had replied to my previous comment, not directly to this post. I don't want to take up more space here with something that's not related to the original post, so I'll just let it go.

    Sorry, Annika.

If you belong to a church or your “friend” does then straight up ask for 16-18 yr olds who would be willing to help serve at a wedding and say $8/hr highschoolers should be fine with it, or ask if the church has a womens ministry /event type group some churches have a group that help with different luncheons funerals/babies/weddings

This post has been resolved from what I can tell but WOW I am totally taken aback by the horrible wages in the States. I was earning $10/hour at 14 when I work my first job so I’m pretty shocked by the fact that $8/hour is considered normal for this kind of work.

I know this is a little off topic but employers are legally obligated to make up the difference between tips and minimum wage. Maybe individual restaurants don't but that's the law. I worked in comp&benefits for an international restaurant chain, and we were very aware of what the law required.

Part of that can be the exchange rate...a quick Google search tells me that currently 10AUD is $7.25 USD.

Minimum wage definitely needs a big change here in the US, it differs from state to state but with how expensive living costs are its ridiculous to consider $7.25 a living wage. In this case, this is a 4.5 hour one time job that a HS age teen can do easily. Babysitting for the same amount of time would pay similarly.

The difference between $8/hour and $12/hour is $4...for a five hour reception (assuming you need two of them all five hours) that is only $20 each. IMO that isn't even worth discussion...skip one dinner out between now and the wedding and it's paid for.

I understand that, however with how many times this friend has upped the cost of our wedding I don't appreciate that it is happening again here. We will have 2 servers-paying them each $12 equals $120 total out of pocket for us vs $80 total at $8 an hour. $40 (which is way more that eating out btw) makes a big difference to our budget even if it may seem small to you. We have decided to raise it to $10 an hour even though it stretches our budget to be more respectful of others time. Thank you for your input.

14 is the legal age to work in my state! I had my first "real" job at 15... I think I have to have a work permit signed by my school guidance counselor. I'm pretty I sure I made like $6.25 an hour and I felt like I was RICH! A few years later around age 17 I was making $8.50 an hour which was well above my state's minimum wage at the time and I really felt like I was rolling in the dough. So what I'm trying to say is I think if you're going to have a couple of kids then $8 per hour is just fine. If you know you are going to need them for 4 hours maybe you could just negotiate to round it up from $32 to $35. When I was 15 I used to spend an entire night babysitting for 20 bucks so I would have been happy to make $35 for a few hours plus get fed.

I am sorry that your friend has seemed to disregard your budget from the beginning. Despite her "knowing how to do these things", it seems only right to me that she should have tried to respect your finances as much as possible. I hope everything works out well for you!
