Alternatives to engagement shoot?

Sus, on February 7, 2018 at 2:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hi everyone! Soon after we got engaged, one of our friends gifted us an engagement shoot with a photographer in my hometown. The photos turned out great and we love them! Later on, we hired our wedding photographer locally, and the package includes an engagement session. We already have more than enough photos from the previous shoot, but I think it would be good to take advantage of the free shoot with our wedding photography, especially to get a feel for her style and how we work together. That being said, I am trying to think of some "out of the box" ideas as an alternative to the basic engagement photos which we already have.
Some ideas I have thought of are a photoshoot with my horse, possibly a beach shoot, maybe family portraits? Bridal portraits are also an option but I want to think of other ideas. Any and all ideas and suggestions welcome Smiley smile

I remember someone having a photographer essentially photograph the couple while on a "date". Like going for coffee at the local coffee shop, walking in a park, walking around the downtown area, etc. Not particularly a sit down dinner date or movie date but just cute things you both enjoy doing together. That way they had both portraits done and candid photos.

Any movies or music artist/videos you admire that you can replicate cover art? Any other hobbies, hiking, skating, dancing, sports, cars/motorcycles? There are some ways you can play off your hobbies and personality thats "out of the box".

How about a boudoir shoot? Doesn't really involve your FS (at least on the front end) but doesn't let the pics go to waste. Of course, not everyone wants those done, and not every photographer wants to take them, but it's something I'm kind of hoping to do.

I was in a similar position as well- My sister took our engagement photos then our wedding photography package came with a boudoir shoot and 2 engagement shoots. I did the boudoir which was a blast and we decided to do 1 engagement photo shoot with her but we are subbing that second engagement session for added time the day of the wedding! We both decided we would rather have a little extra time with the photographers the day of vs more engagement pics. Check to see if that would be an option!

Wow! That's an awesome package you got with your photographer. I've never heard of a photographer offering two engagement shoots.

You can always talk to them and see if you can substitute the shoot for something else in your package. I won a free photobooth but he said we can replace it with a canvas print or something else if we didn't want the photobooth. If you still want to do a photo shoot maybe do something like when that woman did her maternity shoot at a taco bell. Not exactly going to taco bell, but maybe your favorite place to eat. Or you could recreate some of your favorite movie scenes.

I’m doing post wedding photo session with our photographer. Where you wear your dress again and go to another location and take pics!

My FH and I don’t have time to do an engagement shoot together before the wedding, so we just converted the value of the shoot to an extra half hour at the wedding + a lower price for the whole package. We don’t see the need to get used to the photographer because we love her work and we trust she’ll do a great job. We’re going with a different photog for a newlywed shoot so that I can wear my dress again in a different setting than the venue.
