Alternatives to DJ

Weddingplanning, on March 17, 2016 at 9:23 AM Posted in Planning 0 5

Im sure this comes up a lot, but I don't really want to have a DJ. We are having a 30 person wedding including us and our three kids. The ceremony starts at 630 and the reception opens at 7. Our reception will be in the wine cellar of a brewery. Its all exposed brick and barrels. It does have a bar and yes we are having an open bar, but only beer, wine and a signature drink. After the reception we will be going 'bar hopping' in downtown savannah with our friends. There is most definitely room for dancing if we want to utilize that space. We are not doing a bouquet/garter toss. We are not introducing parents. I will have a friend introduce us and our children . I might do a first dance. I basically want background music while we eat and some music to dance but I don't want the typical DJ. Ive met with a few and that's not what we are going for. We are laid back and want more of a fun dinner party. Anyone have any experience with a live band? The venue also offers speaker music.

    IPod or Spotify

ETA: I don't know how big the wine cellar is but I'm assuming it needs to be big enough for a brewery so it should be big enough to fit a live band and their equipment.

A band seems like an expensive alternative. It really sounds like you can get away with background music. How long is your reception lasting?

FYI: Use the search tool in WW. This is a frequent topic with some great suggestions for smaller weddings.

Hook up iPod with a pre-made wedding playlist and let it play through the sound system. Or Pandora, or Spotify.

Really? I wasn't sure if that was considered 'cheap' to have an ipod. The reception will be 3 to 4 hours. Basically as we finish up socializing we will head out on the town.

I'm having a very similar reception. We're having the ceremony and reception in a backyard with catered BBQ. We'll do a first dance and Father/daughter, toasts and cake cutting. No garter/bouquet. The yard has bocce and horseshoes. We're also planning on going out to a bar afterwards.

FH and I don't dance, so the the only reason we would have wanted a DJ would be to emcee and move the party along. Instead we're going to do an iPod and make sure our sound system has a microphone so we can have someone announce us, cake cutting etc.

I don't think it's cheap at all. I've been to several iPod wedding and they were all awesome. However they did tend to have way less dancing than a DJ wedding, but that was the intention.
