Alternatives to calligraphy for invites

Carly, on April 8, 2010 at 5:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I am so not paying someone to write addresses on my invites. Besides clear labels, does anyone have any alternative suggestions?

Just print directly on your envelopes. Any wordprocessing program will have a calligraphy font.

Do you have a printer at home? We set up our envelope size in word and typed each person's address with calligraphy font and fed the envelope through the printer. It looks just like someone hand wrote them!

If you have your addresses in a spreadsheet, you can just do a mail merge and print them all at once instead of one by one.

Do any of your family or friends have nice writing? I'd say have them help. But I think clear labels look best if calligraphy is not an option.

I say you can handwrite them out! It always looks nicer.

I used the script font from my computer and did them myself. They came out very nice.

I will probably print them using my computer/printer. I purchased clear labels when we sent out save the dates but I didn't like the way they looked.

I just hand wrote them...no calligraphy. But then I am having a casual wedding.

We will probably use a nice script or calligraphy font on our home computer and just print them out like that.

I'd say either print them yourself, or find a friend (or you!) who has really nice handwriting to hand write them. I've enlisted the help of one of my sister's friends who has really nice hand writing - she actually hand wrote my sister's wedding invitations as well.

Use your printer at home or a friends. The fonts from word pad lots of nice fonts. Plus you can put it in color for and not get charged for it.

The only thing I would be careful of is to check that the ink doesn't run after you print them at home. We had an inkjet printer for a long time and if I printed on smooth cardstock (or envelopes) and they got wet, the ink would smear.

I agree with the others, though. Find a fun font and print away! Oh, but if you are doing an inner envelope, I think it is a nice touch to handwrite the names on those.

One of my uncles has beautiful Catholic School cursive handwriting and not a whole lot of money, so he's going to address our invites for us as our gift.

I was thinking about using the clear labels but I think sticking them in the printer will turn out much nicer. Thanks guys!!!

Make sure you use an inkjet printer! Most envelopes are not laser jet friendly and the ink will not "stick". Found that out the hard way! BTW - I vote for printing directly on the envelopes. We did this and I had all my addresses in a spreadsheet and just set up a mail merge to print all my envelopes.

    Hi brides to be!

I am so confused about this etiquette buisness...haha. Why are people so against clear labels in a nice font? I did a few samples and they look great! I know that it's not as "personal" but do people really notice the outside addressed envelope? I don't think I remember one wedding envelope that came to my house in the past.

Has anyone else used clear labels or should I just stick to handwriting them myself? Any guest actually comment that the labels you used were "tacky"

Every wedding invite I have ever recieved was handwritten so that is how I will be doing it. Lauren - I obviously don't think anything is wrong with it Smiley winking

The only thing with computer-fed envelopes or place cards is that they can print out crooked, or leave ink lines and smudge. And from my experience, brides don't have the time/patience to deal with this unwanted stress.

Also, clear labels are okay, but depending on the color of your envelopes, it may be better to hand-write. In the end, it's YOUR WEDDING, do what you want! Smiley smile
