Alternatives to Cake

Emily, on June 11, 2019 at 7:50 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
My FH and I decided to have brownies, lemon bars and apple strudel with vanilla ice cream as our dessert options because we really aren't cake people. My mom thinks its weird that we don't want to have cake at our reception and is worried we will miss out on the cake cutting tradition. She also thinks we may offend people by not having cake at our wedding.

I personally don't think this would offend anyone, but do you think that there are enough options for people to find something they like? I'm not going to lie I think I am at the point in planning that I am overthinking things lol.

I'm not having cake at my wedding and I'm a cake person. My FH and I are thinking of purchasing mini cupcakes from the local grocery store and decorating it ourselves.

I've been to weddings without cake and I did not feel offended at all. I didn't go to the wedding for cake; I went there to celebrate! And you have more than enough options for people. And if you (or someone) want a cake cutting celebration, why not cut into the brownie?

We did different mini desserts and didn’t have a cake or a cake cutting! People tried to tell us we needed a cake and when I asked why they said for a cake cutting picture. I said I don’t need to spend 2 grand for a picture of something that I don’t care about haha. Everyone enjoyed the desserts and it was fine.

As long as you have dessert, that’s all that matters. The only time I find this rude is when couples have a cutting cake and no cake to offer their guests.

Thanks ladies! I think I am just overthinking things. I was planning on having the "cake cutting" be one of the 3 dessert options we would be providing.

Your desserts sound yummy! We also aren't having cake and opted to do an ice cream bar from our favorite local place instead. Don't overthink it!

I've been considering a dessert table honestly. Not a weird idea at all!

Your options sound delicious! We are doing something similar. 3 desserts that people can choose from. One is technically carrot cake, but mini-versions of it. Our othe desserts are lavender pannacotta and bread pudding.

As long as your are serving desserts, I don't think anyone will care. You can always cut a tray of brownies or something if you want the cake cutting experience.

We did not have a cake. I don’t think anyone noticed tbh! We had Caribbean desserts (in Puerto Rico) like coconut sorbet, dulce de leche, flan, etc. that people still talk about. They loved it.

I don't like cake either. We will have a cutting cake just for pictures and tradition, but we will serve donuts, coffee, and ice cream as our dessert. The last 2 weddings I went to, there were SO MANY cupcakes left over because not everyone eats dessert anyway, especially if there is heavy drinking.

I think alternatives are cool. I didn't even think about them til I found out how much wedding cakes actually cost. One thing I do love are macarons and cronuts but those cost even more than a cake

I don't think there is anything wrong with not having cake. I was ok without it but FH really wants it. You could bake some cookies too (im from Pittsburgh and the cookie table tradition is what everyone wants more than the cake LOL). I'm also considering having pie options. But honestly you have 3 options for people....that's more than with a cake anyway because thats usually just one flavor. I wouldn't stress it. If you don't want cake, don't have it!

I keep getting the same feedback when I tell people we're having a cookie table (a Pittsburgh tradition) at our wedding instead of a cake. We finally agreed to get a very small one tier cake just to do the cutting and then the first dozen guests can have a piece of it if they truely must have cake.
