Alternate to chargers?

There's really no need for chargers. Just put the plate on the table. If you are doing a buffet and the plates will be at the buffet, you could set the table similar to this:

I’ve seen both these routes before. The paper doilies could be cute & you could even spray paint them gold. I like the The elephant palm but it is kinda pricey though depending where you’re located.

If you choose to use paper doilies, I would just buy gold ones to start with.

If you prefer chargers, look for them used on www.searchtempest.com or local Buy and Sell or Bride to Bride Facebook groups.

Other than that, pick a common color and just watch for sales.

We purchased 250 chargers from dhgate for 75 each. If you have time for shipping from China, that could be an option.

I don’t think chargers are really necessary any more-

I like the look of the napkins hanging off the table. I think that's a popular look right now, and it means keeping it a bit simpler.
