Altering My Mom's Wedding Dress

Casey, on July 22, 2016 at 1:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

So I really love my mom's wedding dress and I really want to wear it at my wedding but it's a size 0 and I'm between a 4 and a 6. I realize it's probably impossible resize a 0 to a 6 but if anyone knows of anyway I could or anyone that has the capability of resizing the dress I would love their info. Also I'm not engaged right now so I don't have an actual date or anything but I probably will be engaged soon.

Speak with a tailor/seamstress about adding gussets to each side or perhaps a corset back.

Maybe changing the back to a corset back might help a bit

I feel for your dilemma...I love my mom's dress, but she's a petite lady with normal proportions and I'm a little...uh...sturdy, with a large bust. There are ten sizes between that dress and me. Smiley sad

Corset back is a great idea but...don't count your chickens. I started thinking we were going to get engaged around two years after we started seeing each other. It's been 5-1/2 and we just got engaged in May.

Corset back is a great idea. A good seamstress also might be able to take it out a couple inches depending on how much fabric there is. I'd love to see the dress, can you post a pic?

While seamstresses are able to work magic with a lot of dresses, be prepared for the possibility that the dress will need to be completely reconstructed, which means you may see it in pieces at one point. Some moms have a hard time seeing a special garment like that (and some can't stomach the thought of alterations at all - so unless your mom has said she'll let you wear it, have a backup plan.)

If a seamstress can't, I would consider using fabric from the dress to recreate a whole new one.

Yeah I've talked to my mom and she would love for me to wear her dress and she knows it's physically impossible for me to become a size zero, I talked to her about the corset back and she loves it, hopefully I can find a picture to post to show you guys, thanks for all the advice.
