Altering a size 8 down to a size 2-4

Christine, on May 12, 2018 at 11:33 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

Hi there!

It's my first time posting in the forums. I fell in love with this Theia Harper dress at a sample sale.

https://www.theknot.com/fashion/harper-theia-wedding-dress

It the sample was a size 8, and the store owner said it could be altered down to a size 2-4. I'm feeling nervous now after reading up about dress alterations online (mostly seamstresses saying in forums like this that it's hard to know whether a dress can be taken in a lot since it depends a lot on the dress itself), so I'm wondering if anyone on here knows whether taking in a dress like this up to 3 sizes would be doable. I'm really sorry if this is a totally newbie or obvious question, it's my first time wearing a long gown or an alteration more complicated than simple jean him, and wedding planning has me feeling a bit nervous and stressed.

Thanks so much for any advice. It's a little early for me to be bringing it in to a seamstress (since my wedding is a year out), but I'm crossing my fingers for some reassurance. I really hope I didn't make a big mistake.

I bought an off the rack dress too. It was a size 8, and seamstress took it down to a 0-2. Find a good seamstress if you go this route. Mine had to be re-beaded and appliques re-sewn, so be aware if you have a lot of lace, as that could get pricey.

You need to find a good seamstress. Alot of places don't recomend taking it down to more than 2 sizes smaller, but since it's only 3 I'm sure it's doable.

I agree with the above. GORGEOUS DRESS. Another thing to note about your dress specifically, is that it's a-line, and not super complex. I think this is definitely a factor when it comes to resizing, and should work out in your favor. I have an a-line as well, and was told that they are generally less complicated to take in. Yeah, it may be slightly pricier, but I don't think it should be insane.

The waistline (skirt) should be easy, because there isn't any detail. It's the bodice where it's going to be tricky, and you will need an experienced seamstress as it will likely need to be take completely apart to get the proportions correct for both the front and the back detail.

Expect it to cost some $$ though...
