Altering a made to measure gown - beading question

LadyBird, on December 16, 2021 at 3:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

Hi there!

I just ordered my wedding dress for our Nov. 2022 wedding and I'm curious about alterations to made-to-measure gowns.

I found my perfect gown and could not be more excited but for my apprehension about its fit when it eventually comes in.

When I was measured at the store, it was after I had lunch with my parents, debating which of the gowns was "the one". We laughed, we cried, we celebrated with wine and light bites. Smiley smile While that was very fun, it did impact my waist measurement. I'm normally a straight 27", but they measured 28.5".

My one major concern is the gown has the most gorgeous beading on the corseted bodice. I don't want that to change or be negatively impacted if I do need to take the waist in (it's a strapless gown - I want it to be perfectly snug).

Does anyone have experience with this type of alteration? Heavily beaded corseted bodice with 1" - 1.5" needing to be taken in? Maybe this isn't a big deal, but I'm very protective of my gown already. Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated. Smiley smile

If its corseted, the corset will do the taking in and out, you won't have to have it altered there

Ahhh, thank you Samantha! I think I understand what you mean. It's a corset bodice, but has a zippered back if that makes sense - maybe I should have said boning? I'm so new to all these terms!

They would take in the gown from the sides never the front

I think you can put your mind at ease - this shouldn't pose a problem at all - that's a common amount for a dress to be taken in, and the beading wouldn't be impacted by it.

Relax Smiley laugh (I know, hard to do) Wait until the gown gets here and you try it on. Eating snacks, etc really wouldn't increase your waist THAT much. If it is a corseted back - even with a zipper - any slack should be naturally taken up when tightened. IF .. and only if .. alterations are needed, they will take in from the sides. Just a friendly word of advice - make sure you can SIT DOWN in your gown LOLOL Serious, I had a bride who wanted super form fitting look, and after I pinned it I told her to sit .... she couldn't. Ha ha ha, so make sure you can be comfy as well as gorgeous.

The sitting point is a good one, as is the fact that you’ll want to have some wine and bites *at* your wedding as well.

I wouldn’t even give this another thought until your dress comes in and you see how it fits. They may just measure differently than how you have measured yourself. They may be accounting for movement. Whatever the case, it can always be fixed if there’s an issue.

If it doesn't fit perfectly they can absolutely take it in - it will likely be a wee bit of an expensive alteration. Like, I'm planning to wear 6 inch heels to avoid needing a hem because I want a lace wedding dress and I am not shelling out hundreds for a damn hem Smiley xd
