Alterations

Sarah, on July 13, 2020 at 7:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
Hey y’all - are any of you from the DMV area or a major metropolitan? I’m curious the cost you had for gown alterations. Mine are pretty standard with a few minor customizations (removing cups, taking in the skirt). My dress is only two layers. I got quoted $1,700 and I am mind blown. SOS

Wow! Have you checked with other seamstresses?
I’m north of Denver and my alterations are $420 for a bustle, changing the back to a corset, and hemming- the outer layer of my dress is covered in appliqué that has to be removed and sewn back on my hand and there are three additional layers that just need cut

That does seem pretty high! Mine is $840 for a 6 layer hemming, taking in the back sides, bustle and adding cap sleeves. And honestly when I heard the price I was shocked that it cost that much, but the tailor specializes in wedding dresses and has over 400 five star yelp reviews, and I didn’t want to waste any more time on finding someone else. The alteration cost is actually more than what the dress cost. I’ve already made my peace with it for the high cost. Did they break down the charges for you? Or is it a package? I’d say go somewhere else and get a second opinion if you have the time.

I hope you find someone more affordable near you! I got my recommendation from the bridal salon where I bought my dress and she works out of her house, I’m sure that effects cost because she doesn’t have rent.

The PP also made a good point, I’d definitely ask for a breakdown. My alterations are more than double what I paid for my dress because I got it at a sample sale, and when she was going through the cost I was shocked. I probably would have fainted if I had been quoted $1700.

That sounds like WAY too much. Mine was $45 per bustle, $50 for sewn-in cups, and $250 for the hem with multiple layers of tulle. This is in Columbia, Maryland.

Have you looked at seamstresses outside of the immediate DMV area? I went to one an hour outside my city, just acoss the county line. Maybe you can do the same in the DMV and find something futher from the beltway? If you aren't having major tailoring done, you can knock it out in three appointments to limit your travel.

I just had an appointment and have to say I was shocked as well. I knew I would have alterations as I'm only 5 feet tall but the cost for the seams was crazy. What kills me is that when I was measured at the time of purchase it was done very loosely. When I went to the first alteration appointment the dress fir ne no where, not even I. the largest measurement my bust. I trusted the salon and I understand they need to go by the sizing chart from the vendor but after my experience I feel they whole sizing part of dress buying needs to be standardized. I will probably be Paul g close to 1500 for everything needed for my dress. Hard to get another opinion as a friend got a dress at the same salon and did alterations somewhere different and said to me she wished she got them done through the salon.

I'm in Seattle. Two layer chiffon dress with spaghetti straps. I had the hem taken up, sides of just the bodice taken in and the v in the front stitched up a bit for modesty --- $400.

I went one other place before that and was quoted $700 (they charged $150 for every fitting too!)
