Alterations

Hedvika, on January 18, 2022 at 10:40 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
I am taking my dress in for alterations soon. How long should I expect it to take from the day I drop it off to the day they call me to come back in?

That strongly depends on a lot of factors, such as how busy the seamstress is, and how complex the alterations are. They should be able to give you an estimate on the time it will take to alter and also the cost once they have a chance to see the dress on you and get a better idea of what exactly needs to be done. A simple hem or shortening the straps would take less time than altering the dress shape or covering the back or working with beading/applique/lace/etc. Typically, planning for 1-3 months in alterations should be plenty of time. They will usually schedule your appointment for a second fitting while you are at your first appointment.

I agree with Lisa, it all depends on how busy the seamstress is. Some shorties (like me) will need a lot of dress alteration. If if almost fits and you just need the bottom hemmed a bit, it shouldn't take that long. But I suggest you ask the seamstress (not the consult), and just say you'll need it sooner then excepted so they know your time frame. Saying you need it sooner then expected won't make them make yours a top priority but it'll let give them a better time line.

Lisa hit the nail on the head here.

If it helps, I had more boning added to the bodice of my dress, I had shoulder straps added, the dress was let out slightly in the hips, the hem was taken up, and I had a bustle added to the dress, and that took 6 weeks in total, with 3 appointments in all, with the dress finished 2 weeks before my wedding.

Agree with the others! Depends on how the dress is constructed, and what you're having done, plus how busy your seamstress is. I was told to leave 3 months for my alterations, which include adding tulle underlayers, attaching sleeves and moving the straps to accommodate them, taking in the waist, adding a bustle, plus having a veil made.

I had my first alterations on the 12 of January. Will be going back for final fitting on the 5th of February. Will be picking up my dress a day before my wedding. This all depends on the dress and the seamstress as well.
