Alterations: Second opinion?

Sylvia, on January 30, 2021 at 7:44 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Hi everyone!

So I have a question about alterations.

I had my 2nd fitting today and everything looks good. However, the shoulders are still a bit loose. The seamstress will stitch them this week to try to fix it, so we will see how it goes.

After moving around and trying to raise my arms, I believe the issue is with the armholes. They seem rather large and leave a gap underneath my arms. I asked my seamstress about this and she said it would not be possible to fix this because of the lace and illusion directly attached to the bodice?

Would it be okay for me to get a 2nd opinion from a different seamstress? If I could possibly see if someone could fix these it would be better for the dress to fit right. I love the seamstress I've been working with and I want to trust her professional opinion, but I am not sure. I obviously don't know what can or cannot be possible!

What do you all think? Can the armpits be altered? Should I get a 2nd opinion?

Here are some (poorly taken) photos, I don't have any better photos at this moment!

Also, check out that bustle!

Before I read the post I looked straight at the pictures. I immediately noticed the arm pit area. You look gorgeous in that dress however I’m just being 100% honest, I think you might need to get a second opinion because the dress could definitely be taken in in certain places. Seamstresses do this all the time. The arms are supposed to be fitted however this looks a bit baggy but also restrictive. But the dress itself looks gorgeous on you.

What shows at front of shoulders is the extra 3/4 inch to 1 1/4 inch of material put at the whole curve where the illusion is attached to the bodice. Heavier nettings like bodystocking with spandex for stretch and somewhat like pantihose, usually nylon, do not need this. But to get the near see through sheer, there is no stretch, and very much finer denier, ( the thickness of every thread), to get the Gossamer look. And it is like a spiderweb, ruined easily. If the extra is not put in, as many who buy cheap dresses find, the first time you reach forward with both arms, suddenly, like a hug, one or both shreds next to the armhole seam. The extra inch of fabric is your insurance against having the material destroyed by your movement. Your dressmaker sees nothing odd, that is the way it should be. She may never have worked anyplace so low quality they don't routinely do it. Or she would know why the designer does it. A lot of lesser gown makers simply never use any so sheer.

Yes, that does look a little big. I don't know much about alterations either, but if I were you I would probably want to get a second opinion to see if you can get it more fitted. But yes, that dress looks great on you! Very pretty details.

Yes! Absolutely get a second opinion. The dress is gorgeous, however the fit is very off. The bust area does appear to be too big and the armholes are not fitting you properly. I believe a better seamstress would make that dress look like it was custom made for you!

Thank you! I’ll be getting a 2nd opinion. I definitely think it’s possible, even slightly, to alter those areas.

Remember that we are all deliberately looking critically at the dress. In use that dress is so gorgeous, and the embellishments pop so on that sheer silky background material, which is fluid and reflective as it moves, that no one will see that as a flaw. And it it is not, no more than the zipper tab that makes a zipper functional, by being a half inch bit of metal at the edge of your dress. You will be so gorgeous.
