Alterations Question (Hollow to Hem)

NoMore, on August 14, 2015 at 3:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

For starters, I am 4'11". The place where I will be ordering my dress from offered the option to have the dress ordered based on my hollow to hem measurements. For those of you who are not familiar, they measure from the hollow of your neck down to the hem of the dress and order accordingly to avoid having to have it hemmed at all once it comes in. It costs an extra $250 to have it made this way rather than the standard length which I will certainly need hemmed. They made it seem as if this were the cheaper option. My question is for those of you have had this done...do you think it would be worth it? I guess I am just a bit worried that I will need it hemmed anyway once it comes in anyway. And for those of you who ordered the standard length...how much did you need hemmed and what did it cost you?

Can you ask them what the policy is if it's still to long when it comes in? If you order it that way and it needs adjusting it should be on them to fix it at that point I would think.

I would ask before you commit to it.

I think it depends on the dress you have and the structure of it. If your dress has a lot of lace and layers, that will cost a ton to hem. Also, I'm not a seamstress, but with hemming, doesn't most of it come off the bottom? I think when dress makers take the hallow to hem into consideration, that can slightly shorten or alter the bodice as well.

If you have alterations in the bridal salon they will likely run you around $400 + ( but check with the salon) I haven't gotten my dress altered yet but I'll need at least 4-5 inches taken off. I will take my dress to an independent seamstress so my alterations for everything will be closer to $200.

For the hollow to hem, I think you would also need to have already decided on your shoes and everything though since that would be a factor in how long it should be

I wouldn't order that way. That's what my MOH did and her dress was actually too short. A lot comes into that, shoe height etc. It was $300 to custom order hers and she ended up needing to get another dress anyway. I'd rather a dress be too long and need hemmed for peace of mind.

It depends. When they cut according to the hollow they should also be grading the pattern. As a petite person your torso will most likely not be as long as a taller person. So there will be more to adjust than just cutting off the hem. I would consider it.

I'm 4'11'' and I ordered my dress hem to hollow. It cost me less than what the bridal salon said my alterations would start at for just my hemming.

Also, my waist does not fall where the waist in a dress made for a taller person falls. The dress still would sit on my body correctly if it was just hemmed, so the hem to hollow is definitely worth it for me.

My dress isn't in yet, so I can't comment on fit for sure.

Can anyone recommend a good seamstress? Does the hallow to hem alter the dress? I love where it sits on me!
