Alterations question- can this be fixed?

Kelsay, on February 12, 2021 at 10:23 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
Hi everyone!

I went to my first fitting a week or so ago and my mom noticed the sunken in fabric during the appointment. I didn’t notice until I saw the photos.
The seamstress said that if she takes in the fabric more, it will make my (non flat) stomach show more. I’m not satisfied with how it looks right now though and I can’t wear shapewear since the back is sheer. Do you think this can be fixed? I don’t have the “ideal” body shape for a mermaid dress, but it’s the one I fell in love with. I just want to look my best in it.

I would take the dress to another seamstress for a second opinion. I definitely think that can be, and should be, fixed.

How did it look when you tried it on prior to alterations, like when you chose it? Mermaids are supposed to be quite form-fitting, so I wouldn't be satisfied with droopy fabric either. If you tried it on originally and it was more form-fitting, then I don't see why the seamstress can't make it look how it did when you fell in love with it. Also, I don't really see any "belly" on you as it is! I think you look great! So you should go with it being more fitted to your body!

Thank you for being so kind! When I tried it on the sample was a size or so too small. That’s probably why it’s looking this way now. She did pin it some in the front so we will see what it looks like at the second fitting in a few weeks.

When you go back the next time I would see if it’s better. If not I would maybe get another opinion because that should be fixable.

I would definitely ask for it taken in so its more form fitting! (and then maybe add a mermaid petticoat to accentuate the shape more)

If it was only your 1st fitting, I wouldn’t worry. Mention it next time, so that it can be taken in. I agree with tone about maybe needing to add a petticoat for a little lift. Sometimes it makes a big difference. It will also be a better flow when you walk. Surprised the seamstress didn’t catch that. Don’t be afraid to speak up!

Its only our first fitting, i woudl not worry. I have to have 3 with my dress and i had to order my dress as a size 12 and have it taken down to a 6 so there was so much extra fabric at my first fitting and it looked awful but by my second fitting they have taken most of it in and shortened it and it was already so so much better. If they give you any problems or you just are not liking it, take it to another seamstress. Its your dress so tel them exactly what you want and any body type can wear a mermaid and rock it

First off, you have a fantastic shape, especially for a mermaid! Curves are what make it pop (fellow bride with a booty wearing a mermaid 😉)
Second, I think the bodice is too long so it’s hitting in the wrong spot. I got that same saggy look when trying on some dresses. The widest part of the dress should hit the widest part of your hips. If it doesn’t, then you are kind of fighting the dress shape by just taking it in. I would take it to a different place to get a second opinion. Some tailors are just better at certain things than others. Good luck!

Totally agree on the bodice. This dress was made for a taller person or a person with a longer torso. They need to slightly let out area where your hips hit and then take in the extra fabric around your waist and under your hips. Definitely get a second opinion because I don't think just taking it in will fix it

    First off,

    WOW!!! Absolutely gorgeous Kelsay!!

My advice would be to try the second fitting, and if you don't absolutely LOVE it, get a second opinion from a different professional seamstress. I know it's extra, but you want to feel your absolute best and the issue can be fixed by someone with a lot of experience!

Again, you look stunning and I love your dressSmiley smile
