Alterations Issues

Sarah, on April 29, 2019 at 1:34 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
I bought a beautiful dress and planned to have sleeves added to it. Last time the sleeves were made, and it looks beautiful but the because of the weight of the dress and as its mostly backless the sleeves kept slipping off my shoulders. Obviously they plan to try to fix this (the netting on the bust was a bit big which was
part the problem) but I’m worried this isn’t the only issue and that the part that covers the shoulders is too ‘drop shoulder’ style and will continue to slip.

Part of my issue is I’m finding it really hard to communicate with the seamstress...she is lovely and experienced but I feel like when I try to mention something she thinks I’m being a total bridezilla and worrying about nothing. I have no family where I live (my family literally lives 12,000 miles away from me in New Zealand) and no friends to come and help as I moved here not too long ago to be with FH. I feel like my communication issues could be solved if I felt like I had a bit more knowledge around the altering. Does anyone know of any way to stop sleeves falling off the shoulder in a backless gown? I can’t pin it to a bra as the bra is in built (any other bras all showed either at the back or through the dip at the front). The only idea I’ve had so far is to bring along some double sided tape on the day just in case lol though I don’t know how well this would work. Any input would be appreciated!

Do you have a picture? I think it would depend on the style of dress/sleeve.

Do you know how some strapless bras have that silicone like line on the inside of the edges of the bra? That is a horrible description. Frankly, I haven't even worn a bra or a strapless bra for years lol, so I'm going off memory. Anyway, maybe she can put a strip of something like that to prevent slipping.

Fashion tape would be a good last resort. Hopefully your seamstress can get it fitting right, so they stay up.

I agree, do you have a picture? That might help! I would say as a last resort fashion tape is a God! Do you have a bridesmaid who could maybe come with you and try to help explain?

Thanks everyone for replying! I had trouble uploading pictures sorry! I don’t have any since the sleeves were added anyhow. We did eventually fix it - it turned out the sleeves hadn’t been made quite long enough and were a fraction too tight which was stopping it from sitting nicely on the shoulders so they had to totally remake them. Sadly as I have recently moved from NZ to Canada I’m literally 12,000 miles away from my family and bridesmaids so it’s a tough line to walk between being labelled as bridezilla but yet getting the dress the way I want it! Not that my seamstress and co. are rude, they’re totally professional, but sometimes I do feel like they think I have no clue. I had to point out that they’d forgotten to do the bustle last time (in all the kerfuffle about the sleeves it had been totally forgotten). I said something about getting a video for my bridesmaids of how to bustle when the bustle was finished and the lady was like, ‘the bustle is finished’ (cue her ‘aren’t you being a bit of a bridezilla’ look). I go, ‘well there’s a safety pin right there where the bustle should be so I’m going to say no...’ she takes a look and then says ‘oh...the bustle isn’t done yet...’
sheesh. I have literally had 5 fittings. Let’s hope the next is the last. Sorry for the rant...
