Alterations issue

Evergreen, on May 26, 2023 at 10:48 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

Hi!

I am wondering what everyone thinks. I ordered my dress from a well known bridal shop in town, and long story short I believe the shop messed up and ordered my dress too big. I am about 5'5, 116 pounds and they ordered me a size 12! I know wedding dress sizes are different than street clothes, but still! When my dress came in, it was huge, and my alterations person (i went with the lady the dress shop recommends) said she would have ordered me about a size 4. I have not lost or gained any weight and I am not wanting anything complicated done to the dress. I simply want it to fit, and so far my alterations cost are about $1500. But that number is going up because each appointment she is finding new things that need to be done including ordering more lace from the designer to be added to the bodice (not included in the $1500).

I called the shop that sold me the dress and complained about my dress being so big and now my alterations cost is going to be way more than i was expecting. The girl heard me out but ultimately stuck with their story that they ordered me the correct size dress based on my measurements and that no mistake was made on their end.

I am frustrated and feel deceived. I was told by the shop to expect to pay about $700-$800 in alterations, and now its looking like its going to be more than double that amount. I understand that alterations are a valuable service and need to be paid for, but I want the shop to cover some of the cost of these alterations.

Thoughts?? Am I being unreasonable in asking this?

I don't think you're being unreasonable (it seems quite obvious the shop did not order the correct size), but it's also quite unlikely the shop will admit to wrongdoing and agree to pay for your alterations. Have you already begun alterations? If not, perhaps the shop would allow you to return the dress and rush order you a new one in your size. If you have begun alterations, I think your best bet at recouping some of your money would be to have the seamstress call the bridal shop and reiterate to them that she feels they ordered the dress way too large. Since they recommended her, they obviously have worked with her frequently in the past, and they may be more inclined to listen to her professional opinion. If that doesn't warrant any results, you could leave negative reviews of the shop wherever they have a presence online and see if that puts the pressure on them. If that doesn't work, the only method of recourse may be to consult a lawyer or to take the shop owner to small claims court.

Thanks for your response, I have begun alterations so no turning back now, and the shop has made it clear that they would not be able to get me another dress in time. The alterations person is very sweet, but I'm not confident that she would call the shop and vouch for me. Regardless, at my next appointment I can talk with her and see if she is willing to tell them she feels they ordered my dress too big. I think at this point I will end up having to pay 100% of the alterations, but will let them know I will not be recommending them to anyone in the future.

Do you have the paperwork from when you ordered your dress that has the measurements written down? And then the shop’s size chart so they can show you how they calculated their size? I would go in when other brides are there and be reasonable but assertive. They will be less inclined to brush you off or make a scene when they have other customers seeing what’s going on.
