Alterations for Larger Bust Taking In vs Opening Cups vs Split Size

Lea, on January 27, 2020 at 10:00 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

Hi all!

Trying to decide on my dress and alteration options are important for me in selecting my dress given my bust (36 DD, I've had some alteration horror stories in the past). I am measuring a 12 bust, 6 waist, 6 hips.

I have been to several bridal stores. I definitely should have asked them some more questions (was a little overwhelmed). Majority of stores I went to insisted I would order a 12 and they'd take in the rest of the dress.

Two other very established shops I went to said that taking in the dress that significantly is often much more complicated and said that they would open the cups or order a split size instead. They both mentioned that they've had other larger busted brides have fairly significant issues at times with taking in their dresses.

Curious what opening up the cups even means and what other larger busted brides have done. Thanks for reading!

I was a size 14 in my bust and a 4 in my hips. I ordered a 14 and my seamstress had no issues taking in the rest of my dress.

If you have an option to order a split size, that seems the safest and easiest way to go.

I was ordered a size larger for the bust and was told to have the rest of the dress taken in

    Hi Lea,
Congratulations, I wish I was in your situation, ( I'm more than a A cup, but less than a B 😂 ) I have 2 girlfriends who needed your kind of alteration and had no problems, and loved ❤️ how their dresses turned out!! 👍

From what I’ve heard I’ve been told taking in the dress is one of the easier alterations. I’m a big F and normally a size two and had to order a size 10 dress to make sure my girls are accommodated and they are just taking in the waist
