Alterations costing almost as much as i paid for the dress

Caryn, on August 15, 2023 at 9:36 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

I fell in love with a dress online but found out that it had been discontinued. I was disappointed but moved on until I found that dress in my size in good shape at a sample sale. I was very excited and ended up spending about $1250, which was amazing since my budget was $2500.

The dress already fits almost perfectly -- mostly needs a hem and the sleeves shortened. It also needs a little repair work in terms of some loose beads and a missing snap. I was shocked to learn that alterations would be $600-$950 since there is so much beadwork involved (particularly in shortening the beaded sleeves).

Trying to remind myself that I am still under budget, but geez! Still love it, though!!

Wow that's a beautiful dress! Love the sleeves! I bet the sleeve will be complicated to shorten, and why it's costing you to do it.

There is a LOT of handwork (beading) on those sleeves, so shortening them would involve UN-beading, shorten, and then RE-beading them and trying to keep true to the original pattern. Then hems ..... each layer needs to be shortened and re-hemed. I know it sounds like a lot of money, but there is a lot more work involved than what meets the eye. I would be leary if you mentioned how INexpensive your alterations were - I am a firm believer in "you get what you paid for". FYI that dress is stunning!! congratulations on finding it at a sample sale.

Yeah, I knew the sleeves would be a thing, so I specifically went to a seamstress recommended by the bridal shop. I want it done right!

Fortunately the rest of the dress is just one layer of crepe, so it's pretty straightforward.
